Well it has a hinge on it so I'm guessing some type of Armature of some sort

Yeah.. looks like an arm of sorts, you can definitly see how it folds up and everything. But its main purpose, who knows.

Well... that looks like a globe motor. Aparently no reduction on first chain-sprocket stage. Looks like 2:1-ish reduction on second stage. So, your max torque at the hinge should be about 25ft-lbs. That's not a lot. So, the output section of this thing must be light and not intended to do any real muscle work.

But I am intrigued by the apparent lack of any kind of feedback (potentiometer or otherwise) on this articulated joint.

I can only guess that this thing has been designed to simply unfold. Perhaps this is a ramp blocker device. Can't wait to find out for sure.
