Our Thunder Bot has two speeds that are shifted "on-the-fly" using pneumatics. We can shift "seemlessly" even while the robot is under load. In the picture, we are in low gear and able to push about 400 lb.

that's probably not metal - they look like zip ties to me (and as long as they settled into grooves or something and not actually touching the floor it is perfectly legal)
