On the left is last year's wheel and on the right is this year's wheel. Both designed by Mini-D67.

What is the tread material on the wheel on the left?

I believe that it is some kind of neoprene tread. Not 100% sure, i'll check and edit this post accordingly.

iamnafetsYou need spinners on those things (hubcaps that are separate from the drivetrain and spin independently)...so cool... On a separate note, is there a specific reason for that design? Is it most structurally sound, looks cool...what?

Mostly, the reason they are designed like that is to cut down on weight; secondly to look cool!
The wheel on the right (2004) is about half the weight as the 2003 wheel. I'll try to get justin on CD again to give his opinion/facts about the wheels..
Me, Justin (MiniD67), and a bunch of students and mentors think it would be cool to have spinners on the bot, but I don't think they'd hold up too well in competition...
Sweet wheel design Rickertsen2!

You dont need to use wheels to get onto the platform

Hey guys, thanks for the comments on the wheels. I designed the wheels based off of several real world wheels that I liked. I basically made my own version out of 2 or 3, then edited them to make them as storng as possible. Nearer to the end of the build season when we see where we're at weight-wise (might not have any left!
) I'm going to see about making some brake disc/caliper simulators... just for that added cool factor
As for the issue of getting on the platform ( they're 6 1/4in, BTW), ya'll will just have to wait and see what we've come up with... you'll be quite suprised I think.
