Andy, Dennis, Kyle, Paul at Dean's

This is a picture from the Game Design presentations this past summer (2003). Ken Patton took the picture. I am on the left, Dennis Hughes is next to me, Kyle Hughes (Dennis' wife), then Paul Copioli. Dave Verbrugge could not make the trip.

We worked for 5-6 weeks on a complete game design, representing the Midwest, and presented it to the official "Game Design Committee" (Lavery and all) in July. It was a great experience to work with these people. It was especially humorous to hear Dennis and Paul argue about the aspect of putting steps into a FIRST game.

Rich,

Thanks, but your praise needs to go to the official "Game Design Committee" that the FIRST Board of Directors assembled this past summer. Some of this year's game came from our little team's presentation, but only parts. I'll try to describe the process:

5 different committees were asked to create complete game designs. Each of these committees were invited to Westwind to present to the official "Game Design Committee" (GDC). These presentations took place in July. Once we all presented our ideas, the GDC met many times and created the game we see today. They took input from all 5 presenting committees, added their own thoughts and created an excellent game. Our "Midwest Game Design Committee" was just a part of the process.

What Andy wrote is exactly how the process worked. We did not get a chance to see the other 4 sub-team's proposals; but the stairs did come from our proposal (although the other design committee's could have had stairs, too).

Dennis and I argued extensively about stairs. I was a proponent and he was opposed. The funny thing is that his team (27) is climbing stairs this year and my team (217) is not. I just find that really ironic.

By the way, another thing from our game is the way we rank in the qualifying rounds with wins-losses and losers score as the "ranking points". Again, other sub-teams may have proposed it; but I know the current ranking method is exactly how we proposed.

to everyone who helped design this year's game...thank you.

talk about a group of people who really help put the "I" in FIRST. you all (and every other engineer out there who gave up a second of his time to help a FIRST team...no matter what year the team is or how successful) are my heroe's. thank you so much.

Great job with the game this year. I never knew so much was involved in designing a FIRST game. About how long does the whole process take?

P.S. whats Dean's island fortress like? i've heard alot of things about that place.

Andy B.
so did each group present their own game that they create, if so, can you describe the game your group came up with?

We were only allowed to reveal what was in this year's game. There are many other elements that may come in future years, so we are not allowed to talk about it.
