Brandon MartusIs this the result of Steve Wozniak attending FIRST competitions?

KyleGilbert45Welcome to the club.....

EDIT: looks a little too scratched up to be brand new....but hey mine looked like that a week after I had it so oh well...
03-08-2004 16:45
FranchescaWow!!
That is definitely awesome.
Just think about it ... with that form of identification if its gets lost or gets stolen ... its a sure bet to retrieve it!
I like the idea of putting my name or some kind of phrase on my properties in order to identify them! I'll keep that in mind for when I get MY ipod!

I had nothing to do with this.
I will provide proof if necessary.

Max LobovskyMaybe its just my eyes, but I think I can see significantly worse compression artifacts around the "I am JVN" suggesting that it was added to an existing jpeg and recompressed. The text also looks different in general on close inspection. If it was a fake, it was simply white text overlayed the picture. It was a good choice of picture though...

Hmmmm, maybe the ipod belongs to CD47-Bot. He has remained awfully quiet on this. Instead of changing the custom user title to "I am JVN" like scores of us did he decided to out do us all and get an ipod engraved!
Or atleast make us think it with Photoshop.
The only bad thing about getting something like that permanently done is you have to ask yourself "What will you do if JVN winds up not being cool anymore?!"
Although we all know there's no chance in that happening!
P.S. I am well aware that the 'Bot ain't human.

has absolutely no scratches after 2 days.
03-08-2004 21:46
Amanda MorrisonHey now... in my defense, I'm not completely old and blind... I can tell with the blurred serial number that it was photoshopped, but I'm having trouble seeing the engraving photoshopped. Can anyone blow it up or anything?

Hey Baker, what exactly does the Delphi Corporation pay you to do out there this time of year? After a long FIRST season which includes time away from those beautiful daughters and lost time at work, I'd figure a guy like you is waaaaaaaaay too busy to spend time on something that is usually reserved for a ninth grader with no summer job and no girlfriend/boyfriend.
Oh, and the ninth grader can probably do a better job with the Photoshop work.
Can't you just feel the love.

Amanda MorrisonI bet DK $10 that it's real. I hope him (and whomever else wants to take a bet) are prepared to buy my meals at Kickoff.
I have thoroughly examined this and have determined that it must be real because:
-I think the camera's quality explains the text.
-I think that Andy couldn't possibly photoshop something that well (no offense)
-I think that since I found out about them etching the iPods for free, he would do something this crazy
-I think someone could talk Andy into doing something this crazy. I NEVER doubt the insanity of pig farmers.
Bets are open.

So not only is the most esteemed WFA winner ever goofing off with Photoshop, but two of the most esteemed college members of FIRST are making side bets (cough - illegal gambling - cough) about said work. I believe the off season can officially be over now

Amanda MorrisonIt's just a small, friendly wager on the wrongness of the CD Community.
I tried really, really hard and couldn't find photoshop lines... I dare anyone else.
p.s.- I just looked at Kyle Fenton's iPod, and I think it's funny that the font is the exact same... although Kyle's is blurry, I still maintain that it's not photoshopped.

I am going to have to back up Amanda here, even though this may prove to be wrong.
I am a photoshop ignorant, but if you look at the over all image you can see things in the reflection that kinda look like ceiling panels. These lines go directly through the text, which makes me think that it is real. As for it being crooked, if you align the text with the bottom it looks strait, but if you align it with the top it looks crooked, I think this is because of the glare of the flash.
03-08-2004 23:20
I can prove the photo is fake. I took a look at the advanced properties of the picture file
Baker's camera is a Cannon A-60...
According to the properties, the picture was uploaded from a Nikon E5000....
Edit
Case is still open...
I think its pretty safe to say the iPod does not belong to Baker.....
So its time to prove the engraving is fake
03-08-2004 23:21
KyleGilbert45Just to back DJ up, I also took a screen shot of the advanced properties.

Look they used Adobe Photoshopped 7.0

also... I have a question for you guys. Wouldn't it also show photoshop as the program used, since the serial number is blurred out?
Doesn't that mean that it could still be a real picture?

Since it was made at 1am, I'm inclined to believe it's fake. Someone was staying up late having some fun.

but Amanda probably made the best point for the real side, and im definatley going to stick with my original desicion, and say that its real...

04-08-2004 00:30
Ryan F.Why would someone have an ipod with a blurred out serial number....if it's the real picture? .... Anything you want to be telling us andy??
04-08-2004 01:20
Joshua May
Allright, you guys have to look at this logically. In Post #28, Andy said that there is a twist, and that someone had previously posted the correct answer. Reading through the posts, I've found the following that seem relevent:
Brandon said in Post #4 said that it could be the work of Steve W
Clark Gilbert said it could be Brandon's iPod
David Kelly said it was Photoshoped
DJ said that Andy and Brandon conpsired and that the engraving seems crooked
Max Loblovsky said there could be strange compressions in the file.
Now, to rule out some of these. DJ looked back at the image, and it seems that the crookedness could be the result of the glare.
Max's eyes were tired, and I don't see any weird compressions.
Brandon has shown off his iPod, so we know that it isn't his iPod if the image is real.
We have proved that the image went through Photoshop, at least for the blurring of the serial number.
So it's either photoshopped, or Steve W had something to do with this, I'm thinking it was Steve, Canadians are tricky like that.

I have been putting in 12 hour days for the past month, which stinks because it is nice outside. We (me, 2 other engineers, and 4 stilled tradesmen in my department) just got done shipping a fully-automated robot to our Milwaukee plant, for the calibration and test of our latest Engine Control Modules. The robotic cell incorporated an EPSON Scara 65S robot. On the head of this robot, it had 3 festo cylinders, 1 keyence bar code scanner, 1 Schunk gripper, and 1 ATI tool changer, weighing 6.5 lbs. It was neat to watch, once we got it working. At full speed, it sounded like a Pachinco game. We went from design to shipping in 5 weeks. And it has to run 2 shifts a day when installed. Now, I gotta make sure all of my prints are right, because production wants 4 more. And... I am trying to start this side business thing, which takes up my evenings, after the kids get to bed. It's August already? Wasn't it May last week... yikes! So... with all of that said, a guy has got to have fun. "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." OK... back to work. Andy B. |
By the way, I love the Perry Mason references - anyone here under the age of 25 know who Andy is talking about? *Checks birth certificate - sigh*
04-08-2004 10:16
JVNWhoa! Andy I didn't think you'd actually go through with it!!!
I've been swamped at work for the past few days, and didn't see this thread until now.
Okay... seriously now, here is the back story from my point of view:
Andy and I were talking one night, and we were joking around about iPods. He told me he was thinking of getting one for long car rides, and long days at work designing. (Brief aside: who here has ever spent 12 hours at a CAD terminal? *raises hand* who thinks it's better with music? *raises hand*)
We were browsing, and then joking about the free engraving. (I think the original joke was "Put Andy on Survivor") I told him if he had any balls, he'd put "I am JVN" on there... he laughed. That was the last I heard of it...
Then.... I see THIS thread.
Seriously... someone suggested it is a gift for me.
I like that idea. Andy, any chance you'd be willing to donate your iPod to a poor college FIRST dork?
Cool Stuff man,
Technology comes to Indiana.
JV
PS - as far as having my name on Andy's iPod goes, I think it's pretty funny, and pretty darn cool.
04-08-2004 10:23
Jessica Boucher
I think...
...that this is a pretty darn good replacement for "Type your username with your...". Quite amusing, if you ask me.
Baker, just like I told Rich Wong last nite, you need to learn a new word: Starts with a "V", ends in a "n", has "acatio" in the middle. Both of your families will love you for it. I think you're on the right track with your evening-vacations.

Someone would have to be very good at PS to get the lettering to look like that. Altho depending on how it was engraved(laser etched or really engraved) it would leave different markings and that looks like something a cnc machine or something of the like would probably etch because of the way the letters start and end.
