Go to Post A wrench isn't a nesscary part is it? Last Night, we tested the robot and a large, (yes I said LARGE) wrench fell from somewhere on the robot....Along with bolts, nuts, and a very interestingly cut piece of Aluminum... - Will Bale [more]

Very nice work done by team 716. Whats the gear reduction there Andy? How much does it weigh? I guess this time I will have to stop by your pit to take a look at it.

Andy, 716 and yourself continue to amaze and inspire myself and FIRST teams alike. I hope to see a white paper some time on the new gearbox.

You all should know that Andy and team 716 has been working on gearbox design iterations for the past 4 (or so) years. He and his team has led the way in FIRST gearbox designs. This is another great creation from the Who'sCTEKS.

That gearbox makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside... How many fps can you go with it in high gear?

Thanks everyone! Greg, as I told you at kickoff, I liked your 'outside the plate' gear design. It solved several space issues.

As for all the other questions, I am so far behind that I do not even know how much it weighs. It is lighter than last years, which is offset by the second CIM. I have never looked at fps, if you read my papers you will see that I generally run a 2:1 ratio to an 8" wheel. On this box output in high is around 500 rpm with a 12:28 sprocket to the 8" wheel.

Very nice design Andy. Are you going to be taking some weight out of that large gear that is totally visible in the picture?

Besides that sweet gearbox I like the black paint (powder coat) job done on the frame.

Nice job on the gearbox!

How's your team doing with the encoders?

Are you sure it is powdercoated? What is it Andy? Is it really powder coat? Or some kind of paint? That's a nice color.

The frame is blue with a red metal flake. It is automotive urethane, nice having someone who restores MOPARs for a living on the team!

As for the big gear weight, they started at 1.6 lbs, now .85 lbs. It will depend on how much time we have for further weight reduction in the gearbox. We weighed them last night, 9.25 with the CIMs, without the sprocket.
