It looks like the tread is pop riveted on or bolted on. They look really good, I wish my car's wheels could look as good as that.

the tread has 4 screws where the belts come together(2 on each side) but the rest of the belt is held on by epoxy epoxy. i can;t remember the type of plastic they are made of but even with the tread they weigh less then the wheelchair wheels.

It almost looks like a nylon type material. Highly durable (not much less durable than aluminum), and it has a little "give" to it.
