Absolute amazement.............
.... a work of art, no means of physics to explain this.
Finals: Finger Lakes Regional

where any of those tetra's counted as being scored even though they werent all seated on the main??

So i take it red won it right cause after reds first one the rest are more then 6 inches off center.
05-03-2005 21:13
HaWkeYe15I'm still trying to figure out how they stayed up there.

Wow. Do you know who got the posession? I think it's red because the top red tetra looks like it fits the definition of stacked. 6 points to red and blue.
05-03-2005 21:21
Ashley WeedThe outcome of the match, and the positioning of the other elements on the field, I will have to say red had this.
There are a few others floating around on here from Finger Lakes. Someone from 191 may be able to post the exact clarification/ruling from the refs, or I am sure JV-N will be reading through at some point and time, and will give the "exact ruling".
05-03-2005 21:22
dlopezThey were all stacked until 1507 on blue descored them. (I think). Either way, it belonged to red because that was the final match of finger lakes regional and we ended up winning. Thanks again to 494 and 639 and great job to the blue alliance as well

JVNThis was the FINAL move of the Finger Lakes Regional.
Each alliance had 1 win, and we went into the final match.
We managed to cap the center goal, in the game winning move; only to have the stack knocked over (Accidently) by our partner 1507.
(This all happened in the last 5ish seconds).
The entire crowd sat on the edge of their seats; knowing the results of this entire regional hinged on this call (no pressure for the refs).
There was MUCH confusion as to who actually knocked over the stack.
In the end, the refs made the 100% CORRECT call, awarded ownership of the goal (and a 20+ point swing) to the 191/494/639 alliance.
It was a terrible, heartbreaking way to lose, knowing we had it and then lost it.
Still, a 100% fair call to crown one of the most exciting final matches I've participated in.
Congratulations to 191, 494, and 639.
You guys earned it! I will ALWAYS remember that final series, and the incredible matches we had.
I will post more FLR observations and thank yous tomorrow -- when I get back to Clarkson.
Cheers from Roch-cha-cha,
John

the top three were not counted. As it was explained to me, since the blue team had snagged them and pulled them off center, they did not count (because the top one was theirs)
if the red team had pushed them they would have all counted.
I dont understand it, thats how it was explained to me.

tiffany34990wow that's just an interesting shot and how that happened. those tetras just happened to be in the right spot for that whole thing to stay together like that

Physics be darned! Honestly, that's a cool picture, and it sounds like it was a great final match. Congrats to 191, 494, and 639!

That was the craziest stack, and SUCH an exciting aspect of the last match of the finals. We were all losing our minds waiting as the stack was being discussed
06-03-2005 11:39
Ashley WeedI think the most amazing thing was how long they stayed on top, and didn't fall over. During the long, long await for the final score, I was sure that either from the refs measuring, breathing, or just starring at it - it would topple over.
Congratulations to an outstanding Regional!! All, top notch teams!

I just watched the video that my dad took at RIT. We have this amazing moment on video, and in slow motion, it is truly amazing to see how the stack tips.

The refs took what seemed like a life time to get the ruling on that. I remember just taring my hair out just watching the refs huddle, break up, and huddle again. The best moment was when the ref was explaining the ruling to the alliance captains and I saw 191's coach's jaw drop in amazement.

Dan-oI have a HUGE issue with the scoring at FLR that I will talk about more in detail when I get a cord to download my digital pictures. During every match of the qualifying and elimination, tetras were counted, nomatter what their orientation. I actually have a picture where there are only 3 tetras that are seated properly, 2 red and 1 blue. The score ended up being 50-4 in favor of red with no home zone bonus. There were tetras barely hanging on by a corner (i know everyone has seen this happen at least once by now) and they were still counted. It wasn't until the 3rd and final round of the FLR finals that they brought out the tape measure for the First time. This frustrated me, as in other matches, these calls made huge point swings that often changed the winner of the match. Congrats to the #2 alliance of 191, 494, and 639 for winning the competition in excellent fashion.

I dont know all the details, but it was explained to me that if the red team pushes the stack half off, and the blue had the tetra at the top of the stack, they all still count
but if a team disturbs a stack with their own tetra on top, they can 'descore' themselves in the process
maybe I misunderstood, but I think that is when they have to get the rulers out, to see if a team de-scored itself.

I found the rule in the manual:
<G18> ROBOTS can remove or displace TETRAS CONTAINED in a goal, but cannot remove the opposing alliance’s STACKED TETRAS. If an alliance ROBOT removes any STACKED TETRA of the opposing alliance, the TETRA will be SCORED (3 points) and the opposing alliance automatically OWNS the GOAL for the remainder of the match regardless of what color TETRAS
are on the goal. There is no penalty for removing a TETRA that is precariously positioned on a GOAL or TETRA, but not fully STACKED.
all the tetras in the photo were properly seated, but as the last blue one was being placed, the blue bot pulled the stack half off, de-scoring the red one 2nd from the top. According to the rules, the goal was then owned by the red team.
The rulers were out to make sure the top ones were off by more than 6 inches.

Yan Wang,
Any chance you can post that video somehow since I'd love to save it since it was one of the best suspenseful matches I've ever seen.

Truly the best part was when all of the scores had been given to the team captains. Since they knew who won we would not let them go back to their alliances or even turn toward them until the score went up. The X-Cats captain almost died with excitement and yet not able to show it. Again I say, the refs did a great job and the teams were great sports. GP was at it's highest at FLR and you should all be proud.

Our alliance partners were amazing and are truely aweeeesomeee robots! I don't think we could have chossen better partners! Thank you for the previlige of teaming up with you.
I am a six year mentor veteran of FIRST but our team is still a rookie team. The drivers are amazing except for one item. Experience says at the end of the match you stop your robot and touch nothing. My teams have lost matches in the past by not stopping our robot at the end of the match. I can truely say we have great drivers but this was a rookie mistake.....driving the robot unnecessarily at the end of the match. Our students and coach are all "rookies" and this time it bit us. Please forgive (gracious professionalism) our team, it was purely an accident. I am not worried about my team (1507)because we started with nothing and did OK but we let the alliance down. If it is an consolation, I think a lot of people and teams will remember the tipping tetra match.
Referees:
They did an outstanding job in this difficult final. For a first time regional, they did a great job. I would have had incredible difficultly scoring that last match. (It might have taken me a few hours and lots of pondering...hehe)
WINNERS:
Team 191, 494, & 639 Congratulations! You are great teams and outstanding robots (especially 191)! I hope you have great success on the road to a possible championship.

Tim DellesHey no problem. As our coach would say we win our share. we all learned a great lesson at this regional, especially your drivers, and that is as you mentioned, don't touch the sticks if you have it won. But yes it was a great alliance.
Congrats to 191, 494, and 639 for there win.
The refs did a GREAT job, and made all the right choices.
Now i just can't wait till Cleveland.
