Today (Friday) at lunch one of those scattered thunderstorms sprung up, catching everyone off guard. Luckily the FIRST banner seen in the middle of the picture came out fine; it's blowing sideways in the picture.

The last time it rained like this at Champs it was 2001 and there was the infamous pit flood. It's bad, and it's lighting now, but there is no forcast of rain tomorrow.
22-04-2005 22:11
sear_yodaI was walking with our robot to the field when it started raining. We passed one open loading dock door and saw cloudy skies, walked 30ft and passed another only to see torrential downpour!
I didn't really think much of it until we came to a waterfall across the blue carpet path.

geeknerd99Right before the rain arrived, when the wind suddenly kicked up, there was a ton of debris in the air. Funniest thing I remember about is that everyone seemed to realize at the same time, "This is the FIRST Championships... that means we have safety glasses!
". For about a minute, people were standing in the 50 mile per hour gusts getting blown around.
Then the rain came.

Welcome to the SOUTH'S crazy weather its CRAZY
23-04-2005 13:22
Allison KSpeaking of crazy weather, the average weather website is predicting 6-12 inches of snow the next two days for the metro detroit area. And it was 83 degrees on Tuesday.
Moral of the story - Metro detroit teams bring the Atlanta style crazy weather back with you. I love snow and all but it's nearly May. Of course, you never can count on the weather predictions. So we shall see.

Yeah that day of the storm really caused a huge mess for alot of teams that needed to get to the field and practice, They had to re-route the teams so that nothing would get wet, for like 30 minutes there was a dry spell of teams on the fields. =(. Georgia is known for very very dangerous weather espicially thunder storms or just lightening. Luckily I was indoors all day although I was hoping to go sit and watch the storm, Storms in Georgia are alot different then storms in other states.
For some reason I don't remember the storms in 2001 except the evening storm which we were told to get out of the pool at WDW Resorts.

spadercoolOur team was eating lunch when the storm came and we saw a minature dust storm and I suggested we leave then and we stayed until it started to rain then left. We were drenched. trashbag ponchos

Stefanyeh thoes winds were pretty strong right now I have a tree laying on my house b/c of them. Other than that everything is good...
25-04-2005 10:10
Yellow EyesYea, it was a good rain though. Right before it started there was the large gusts of wind. 2 of our teammates were walking near the fountains when a gust of wind came and they got drenched. It was funny. I got some good "emo" shots with that storm, maybe i'll post em up sometime soon. lol

I had a friend, cough BuringQuestion cough, who skated across that large puddle during the storm. She jumped onto the first board, slid across, then WALKED, across the other boards. without spashing any water.
i didnt even know that there was a second storm that night. when i woke up my roommates told me that there was a storm. Also during this storm a chair blew into the hot tub, and it was spinning around all night.

I was down waiting between matches in the corral when this started, that wasn't fun to try and avoid all the dripping water from the roof of the walkway that all the bots had to use between the field and the pit. At one point we were seconds away from putting trash bags on the bot and controls, because we were stuck in the corral/dome for 5 hours or so because we had 3 matches so close to each other that they wouldn't let us go back to the pit.

If you were not taking a robot to the field, you could get there mostly dry, though the way to do that was pretty crowded. Out the short way from the pits, hug the building, go up the ramps to the Dome level, dash for the Dome through the puddles. Lots of fun.

As it turns out, the umbrella hat actually works!
...Then the wind blew it off of my head.

I was in the pits when it started to rain and I was in the pits when it stoped, the only reason I knew it was raining was when some people came back to the pits all wet.

well, when i was caught in the rain, i was 10ft away from the pit building when my hat flies off. So i turn around and chase my hat, which blows underneath one of those concert fences. So then i realize, i have to sprint 50yds down to the end of the fence, 50yds back to my hat where it was caught on a tree. so after retrieving my hat, i run back. and for being a skinny kid totally out of shape from not playing any sports this year(except the occasional football game) i ran in not out of breathe. And also being from michigan, i didnt wanna go back after hearing about the snow. I did all that yard work just the weekend before.

I have seen worse. That is like a normal summer day here. Although this is coming from a guy who lived in Florida most of his life, and rode out several hurricanes...
26-04-2005 20:48
Cyberguy34000I was running like mad from pit to archimedes field, which happens to be on the far side of the dome. Everytime we had a match I was on field, the moment it was over, I was running back to the pits for scouting. Yeah, lets just say that on the way back, I ran through the rain and got to the dome, I forgot that the dome has extra smooth floors.
Slicked with the rain, I must have wiped out a good 4-5 feet. My side still hurts. Wish I had got to see the dancing men fly away
26-04-2005 21:02
alphaoneYeah a teammate and I were coming back from lunch, riding the escalator back down to the dome. Then we both see this white fog approaching from the distance. And we're both like... That's not good... Then we got hit by the downpour lol. We sprinted across to the dome, only spending about 2 seconds in the rain, and got totally soaked lol.

Those pictures don't really do the power of that storm justice.
I heard a door was ripped open by the winds and a light was knocked down inside the dome. Our kids said they thought a tornado had dropped down .
