Omnibot

Omnibot

Yet another LEGO Killough platform. The wheels are roughly based on Tytus's design. (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30101) I made this shortly after he showed his design, but never got around to modelling it till now.

If anyone wants instructions on building it, PM me. I'll be more motivated to stick steps into it.

ofcourse it works Tom. I have seen another version of this somewhere else. Looks almost the same. I think Tytus has experimented with these wheels and made sure that if they work or not.

It'd be so cool to build something like that !!

Where did you see a version like this? (Do you remember? )

Yes, it works. Yes, it stays together just fine. As soon as I finished the computer modelling, I started taking the real things apart, but maybe I'll rebuild it just to show you...

For those wondering if it works, I made a short video.

Please be patient if the less than one MB file takes a minute to download. You're using my 30kbs upstream cable.

Enjoy.

this is real cool. especvially if you can get it working properly when i made wheels like that i found that they are too jumpy to have any sort of grasefull movement from them afterall it is a hexognal wheel rather than a round one. kudos to you if you build it.

What program did you use to model/render that graphic?

For the actual modelling, I used MLCAD. For the rendering I used POV-Ray, but the actual POV-Ray file was generated by L3P (made even easier by the Windows interface to that, L3PAO.)

That's just plain insane. Amazing. Out of this world. Just, wow. The question is though, could I get a FLL team to build it and get it running???

You probably could, but not for the regular season... it takes a lot of parts not in the normal kit, so I don't think you can. Then again, I'm not in FLL. (Hoping to mentor a team this year though! )

The main problem with the current design is a lack of any sensors. I would love to put encoders on all three wheels, but I only have one. (main problem with my current collection) Without sensors, it slightly less of a programming exercise...

How is it controlled? Is there just a random program in there telling it to drive the motors different directions for different amounts of time or is there some sort of remote of what?

Also, does the RCX offer speed control over motors?

The video is a random program. There is a LEGO remote, but it's rather hard to control all three motors at the same time, especially while holding a camera. Now that I have two RCX's, maybe I'll make a more intuitive control.

I am hoping to add some sort of sensors, but how/where/what I'm not sure of yet. (Obviously not to clear on that... )

Yes, it does. The video doesn't show that though.

Yeah, FLL teams get a lot of extra pieces after they're done with the current year's game board. So it probably wouldn't be a problem.

Definitely, not a regular season drivetrain, though. I wouldn't make them do it even if it was easy.

And people said it couldn't be done. Congrats on yet another "making the impossible, possible." Oh man won't I have fun trying to get the lego kids to build that.

And since this thread came up, I'll warn anyone trying to download the video that my server is currently down. It should be up by tomorrow.

P.S. Thanks, iCurtis.

--EDIT--
Server's fixed. (Actually, now it's running on my lappy. ) Tell me if there are any issues...

As my edit notes (but I want to make it more obvious), my server is back up, in a way.

You should be able to get to the FIRST Contact Database and the Omnibot video. Tell me if you can't.
