Team 1523 Shooter + Video

Our shooter was just rapid fired for the first time yesterday and I am proud to present a video of our bot firing. Please let us know what you think (leave a comment at http://marsbot.org/node/252 )!

We are using the van door motor to turn the arm.

Thanks and we are all looking forward to the scrimmage! Is there any official information from team 179 about the event for this year?

Is there a mechanical way you got the arm to move slow grabbing the ball and fast throwing it? Or is it done with a sensor and programming? I don't think I have to tell you how awesome your robot is. everyone else did a good job of it.

I believe the change in speed is due to the surgical tubing stretching and contracting

You must be using a one-way roller clutch so that the rubber band can over run the van door motor. Very clever.

  • Lets the elastic take over when it needs to.
  • Doesn't require an elaborate catch.
  • Rapid firing without complex sequencing issues.
  • Allows the "follow through" of the arm to partially wind the arm for the next toss.
  • van door motor starts rewind automatically when the arm slows down
Beautiful!

I had my doubts about the feasability of making a rapid fire catapult.

But, you ave done a great job, one that I think has a chance to compete with the pitching machine solutions.

Well done.

Great job guys.

The only comment I have though.

I don't know much about measuring with a radar gun, are you suppose to measure the ball on coming into the radar gun or away from the radar gun?

It looked to me in the video you are measuring your Poofy Balls as it was leaving the range of your radar gun.

Which way should it be or more accurate to make sure the reading you are getting from the gun is indeed what it says it is?

Very nicely done, I didn't think that catapults could come out with a rapid-fire. I can't wait to see it when you guys tweak it and work out the accuracy bugs. Just be careful with the surgical tubing since over time it doesn't pull as hard, which will change how fast your motor pulls those balls up over time. Great job guys.

Im with Eric Scheuing on this, How will it get balls during comp? Throwing into that hole seems hard.

I love the throw on this thing. Reminds me of Mythbusters when they built the card throwing thing. Very cool.

-the loader shown is a prototype. Balls will be collected from the ground via the belt mechanism and/or thrown into a basket (not shown) which feeds the loading tube.
-roller bearings with integral clutching are used for the arm
-not sure which video was posted but most of them were shot at about 20' range.
-trajectory angle is not adjustable in-match. It could be, but we're not trying to. Properly tuned it can score from a wide range of distances from target without adjustment
-in order to aim, the driver and/or camera need to aim the entire bot.
-the radar gun was behind the launcher. They work in either direction. Can't speak to the accuracy of this gun at this speed range though.

Thanks for the offer but I have been working on this issue all day. Basically our web host was reporting us going over bandwidth limits... every hour. Eventually I figured out that I had not removed unneeded accounts after our domain name change (kickbot1523.com to marsbot.org - might not be much shorter but easier to remember I think). The bandwidth was being doubled as the new domain was active on both accounts (don't ask how, I would like to know as well).

Regardless, I believe the problem is finally fixed. We also had a brief period of downtime while the DNS updated from the old account to the new one (again, don't ask why this happened in the first place). A friend has mirrored the video (http://funtimenetwork.com/shooting.wmv) with an unlimited bandwidth account.

I apologize to anyone who wanted to watch our video during our technical difficulties!

Thanks, Looked at your site earlier this afternoon and got the video, quite the interesting setup! My offer is there incase something happens and you need additional bandwidth/storage. I literally have over 1TB or storage at my server's disposal.

Wow. I am guessing this is a local dedicated server, nice. Well, if you don't mind putting it on there I would be happy to link to it . My previous post was basically in general as an update for everyone (I hope I wasn't rude - rather frustrated at the time).

Anyway, if you are interested that would be great. Instead of filling up this thread perhaps you could email me (timarnold[AT]adelphia.net). I am also curious by what you mean by "interesting setup" .

EDIT: Actually... I could give you a better quality version too if you wish. Perhaps we can work something out .

4 wheel drive (makes turning difficult, we need to replace front wheels with something slicker)

Well we can do both so it dosen't really matter... at the scrimmage yesterday we discovered that our lift uses the most power of anything on our bot. We basically relied on human loading as much as we could.

I would say offense in that we don't have the strongest drive train ever. One benifit to both sides however, is that our release point is about at 4.5 feet. At the scrimmage yesterday only one of our shots was blocked. We did get pushed around a little bit though.

Well.. as of now, nothing. Our programmers have their work cut out for them, as we were hoping to utilize the camera to get into position and fire in the beginning of the match. They make it sound like we will not be able to do that, but time will tell.

If you want to see the video of our robot in action at 179's scrimmage, check out http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/pi...le&picid=12958
