Well there's a pot attached to it, so it seems you're going to have closed loop control of whatever system this powers. Are those F-P motors? It reminds me a bit of our dual Fisher-Price/Bosch planetary gearbox combo that powered the first stage of our extension arm in 2004. We did the "gear down for torque, then gear up for speed" thing in a similar configuration to your setup. The output sprocket of the gearbox was attached to a long run of #25 chain that drove the lift, which could quickly lift us with more oomph in reserve. If those are F-P's in the picture, I will guess this is part of your robot lifting system. If they aren't F-P's, I will guess this is the base of an extending arm. Either way, thanks for the memories!

It looks like a Mabuchi motor on the left and a FP on the right. Interesting...

Seeing the slot on the right and the hole on the left reminds me of 254's robot from 2 years ago. They used a very similar mechanism for tightening their chain for their arm. I would guess that this gearbox drives half of a double jointed arm (probably the "sholder" joint), and the slot is for tightening the chain.

And you know what that means! They will be using two of these. I'm betting they will be in the drivetrain.

I'm noticing a lack of standoffs, so I'm guessing this thing will be put onto a frame member. By the size, I'm guessing onto a 1x1 or two. Most likely, from the tourque that thing will put out, it's some sort of arm actuator.

Looks nice!

Okay, a few of you are pretty close. Let's just say we had some "inspiration" from a previous 294 robot or two that may have had some "inspiration" from a previous robot or two.

That is clearly the 254/60/22 arm gearbox mount/tensioner setup from 04 and 05. No question about it. Your newest frame picture only comfirms it. I am sure it'll work out good for you. It worked great for them both years. Very versatile design for sure.

The question is, what improvements did you make/deem neccesary for this years game?

You'll get to see at La, SD and championships...

You guys are scaring me this year though.... You're at SD and LA, 254 is at LA as well...

I wonder if you'll help them win silicon valley for the 10th or so time as well...

I bet you'll be a pretty powerful team this year.
