After a rough mosh pit of 5 bots, this one gets the short end of the stick.

How?

That's at least the second battery on the field incident I've heard about this season.

<G.6.984> All robot panelling must be able to withstand point blank blasts from a shotgun. |

That scene was so bad that I didn't even see it happen, I looked down for just a moment to write down some scouting notes and when I look back up, there's a mess on the field.
And that's our robot in the background, we ended up getting picked by them for eliminations.
02-04-2007 17:48
danshafferi saw a few of these too. please, guys, build a real battery mount, preferably welded into your drivetrain.
02-04-2007 17:56
I was watching that. That basically was the defense scene at Davis. It was intense. I believe just about everyone without bumpers had something like this (but not to that extreme) happen to them.
Davis was insane-like-a-fish!

That robot looks about in as much bad shape as Greg's battlebot did.

And that robot was designed to slice through anything in it's path (literally. I found video of it doing just that on Youtube). What robot did that to that poor little robot?
02-04-2007 18:46
billbo911I have pictures oh this from the opposite angle. We were on deck when this happened. I'll try to post them later.
I asked the team about it after the match when they were picking up the pieces. Let's just say, there is a really good reason you use polycarbonate and not acrylic on robots.

Sam N.Was it harker? I think it might have been harker. They had the huge omnis that would climb on top of everything. They shredded our bumpers when we got into a pushing match with them during a practice round. We won the pushing, but they tore our bumper fabric up. I thought that stuff was tough too! Nothing a sewing needle couldn't fix though.
Even though those Harker wheels were deadly, they still were pretty cool.

umm... how many penalties were there in that match?
Is there a video?
Which team's robot is that on the right?

02-04-2007 20:39
That bot is 1560, from Pinewood. They had a very nice arm, if a bit wobbly.
02-04-2007 21:04
=Martin=Taylor=Thats really sad
1560 had one of the best decorated robots this year, and its a shame it got destroyed.
Here's what it used to look like...

Team 100's "sucker" and arm developed some serious stress fractures at Davis. The polycarbonate armor got some serious dings. But the bumpers... ALL of the cordura was ripped along the bottom, and the pool noodles were hanging out.
That was a brutal game.

Holy cow... as a driver, I'm not sure I want to see a video of that taking place *shudders*
Dont let it bother you too much though, skimming over rule G.6.984 is a common mistake that many teams make. Good luck on it next season

pakratt1991That's the 2nd out-of-robot battery experience there was at davis! WOW!
to bad I missed that match!
03-04-2007 01:05
Darkswordsmithyeah, that game was just brutal. That robot got shreded completely, one of my teammates was crying in the stands. Surprisingly, no yellow card was given in that game i think.
Anyways, Davis' defense was crazy. We had to change the gearbox b/c it was damaged somehow from all those pushing...
03-04-2007 11:54
Commander WolfTeam 1560 has learned their lesson concerning acrylic XD
The panelling had already developed fractures over the course of SVR and earlier Davis qual matches which was bridged with aluminum. When the Harker bot (1072) hit us the panelling literally exploded.
Luckily most of the acrylic was cosmetic panelling, save the back panel which did hold the battery down. All the moving parts of the bot were still completely functional after the round. Harker gave us a piece of Lexon which we subsequently used to re-cover our electronics and we went on pick the number 7 alliance at Davis.
Oh, and we won that match too
03-04-2007 12:14
Jeremiah Johnson
WOW. Yeah, can't say I like the way you've got your electronics covered, even with the side panels. An arm could easily accidentally reach down in there and detroyed everything.

Alpha 997Yeah I was worrying about our platforms getting tore in pieces because we don’t have side bumpers. But those carbon fiber and fiber glass honeycomb platforms proved to be stronger than I thought. We have a small dent on the fiber glass side and that’s it. Our bumpers got ripped off of our robot a couple of times though. Then again, they were attached to our robot by a few wood screws.
I’m making unbreakable bumpers for national.

Be wary... this is FIRST... If you say it's unbreakable, someone will find a way to abuse and break it on the field.

eugenebrooksReview the rules with regard to the bolts that are supposed to be
used for bumper attachment. A specific bolt size is specified.
You now know the reason for that. The inspectors at Atlanta
have promised to be more picky.

Does anyone know if any yellow cards were given as a result?

AlekatHere's a little more of an action shot.

Obviously several bots were involved, and I think it was just a matter of combined forces on the exposed (and kinda brittle) outer plates. I'm not really sure why the battery popped out, but I know things didn't get rough enough to merit a yellow flag.

Ahh, Second bot I've seen with a fallen battery at Davis. I think it happened to 1031 as well.
