Four on the bar? Easy.

This summer at camp, the kids in my robotics activity have a simple task: drive forward and hang from a bar. (Sound familiar?)

I was pleasantly surprised at how well many of them worked; I snapped a picture of a few of them hanging before we had to take them apart.

(The bar is actually only 12" wide or so; for the picture, I switched out the actual bar for one of the side rails. PVC is PVC, right?)

That's because they've got a very good mentor. Nice job Bill.

Yeah, it's definitely worth it. All you have to add to a proper Mindstorms kit is the PVC pipe for the bar (one 10-foot length, two tees, four elbows), some poster board to add a black line below the bar (though perhaps the sensor mat could be used here), and some dental floss (we use mint waxed). It took me five hours to build a proof-of-concept; the kids were hanging at the end of five 70-minute sessions plus a smidgen of extra time.

To pin these on me wouldn't be right. Sure, I showed them better living through worm gears and all, but they've got good instincts. Look for them on an FRC team near you spread over the next, oh, seven years or so.
