Go to Post Throw the programmers (or freshmen with duct tape depending on the state of your robot) in the trailer with the robot for the ride between events. Problem solved. :D - ASD20 [more]

1629 Full size track

End of week one and we have a full size test track almost ready to go. See the new GaCo shipping crate and last year's Rack in the background.

This was a great team building exercise for the student and mentors.

Man you guys are lucky we are getting the supplies to make our full size track but we had no where to put it and home depot didn't come through for us so we are gonna build half the track.

we have a blue ball too.

p.s love the crate and i hope you guys put carpet on it.

*Slight twinge of jealousy at having a full scale indoor playing field, and a place to store the Rack from last year*

That'll be a great help for visualization and whatever driver practice you guys do. Although, I think that you will have to find a way to control the ball from bouncing all over the byuilding - cuz those little walls on the side probably won't cut it! Oh well, chasing a Trackball around is good exercise.

Are those two chairs an official part of the Track? Somehow I think that they will get in the way

How'd you get the space to put that thing? I'm not sure we'll be able to fit a whole track this year in the space we have...

Yup. I think oftentimes we forget to recognize and acknowledge the opportunities for team building that are there for us as teams. When someone sees and identifies those opportunities as they occur, that is something everyone can appreciate.

we have one space that's carpeted but a couple feet short in the width and like 5' short in the length. But we have an un-carpeted area that it fits in but inconveniently has 8' ceiling. haha

you left out the space in the middle, so its not PERFECTLY to scale

Since this was the first time that many of the new kids had worked with the mentors, and even some of the parents, it was a great way for the team to get to know each other, have some fun doing something constructive. Turning those drawings into a full size structure was quite an exercise.

So by "Team Building" I didn't mean "build a bigger team", but "build the team spirit".

Likewise, a small group of students worked with a related familiy member (who was an artist) to adorn the crate with the team logo. Two years ago the team didn't really have a logo or recognizable image. This year it will appear on everything....

We worked with the Economic Development Dept. of our local government (who sees FIRST as a great workforce education program) .
We petitioned the county comissioners to let us use part of an unused county-owned building.

We have 6000 sw feet of space rent free. It's a HUGE benefit.
Look around your area, you never know what's sitting vacant looking for a FIRST team.

Last year, we took a Saturday and built our full-sized rack, working with mentors from Beitzel Corporation (our partner) and with parents. This year, we did something similar with the track. It's always a lot of fun, seeing the field go up over the course of a few hours, and it's a great way to reaquaint ourselves with the rest of the team and with the mentors.

Click here to see a slideshow of pics from the build day; some of it is a kind of timelapse of the field being built.
