On Saturday evening, April 19th, this traveling trophy will be awarded to the fastest robot at the FIRST Championships.
That's right... if you have one of the fastest robots in your division, you may be asked to compete in the "FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge". The four fastest robots will be invited to compete in a 100 ft. drag race during the FIRST Finale, after the Championships awards are completed. This race will take place on the street in the middle of Centennial Park.
The prize will be possessing this cool trophy for 1 year, and having the ability to put your team's sticker on the helmet.
The trophy consists of a 8" Performance Wheel, 19 gears, a 3/8" steel hex shaft, and a jet black racing helmet. Oh... and the gears and helmet spins.
The trophy will be located at the AndyMark booth in the Supplier's Showcase.
This prize and contest is one of the ways we at AndyMark are saying "thanks" to the FIRST teams for supporting us.
Who wants to GO FAST!?!

You should do the same thing at IRI, i'm bringing a lap bot made for fun muahaha
15-04-2008 17:46
=Martin=Taylor=Our robot only goes 10 fps. in high gear... Probably shouldn’t bother
I'm already envious of whoever wins that trophy. That thing looks about a bonjillion times more awesome than the FIRST trophies

I hate to be the one who brings rain on this (fast) parade, but I have a simple logistics issue.
Will teams who compete in this be able to pack their robots up afterwards if the pits are closing/closed?
Just wondering. I think this is an awesome idea, and just want to be sure by participating in this, that teams are not jeapordizing other important things. (Like shipping their robots home)

But I'm sure you thought of that already right?

Well, I was reading your description and I was like...
"Ooh, chrom-y... yep, nice trophy, yep... IT SPINS???
" then I saw Andy Baker as the poster... yep, figures. Leave it to a man who makes a living out of spinny things to make a trophy out of spinny things.
Kidding aside, AWESOME trophy, Andy!
Who knows? Maybe you all will deem our robot speedy enough to compete?
Also, are you allowing autonomous modes to run the drag or does there have to be a human operator? I don't think anyone can drive our robot as well as RALFF...

Beautiful trophy!
I've always wondered why they call us gearheads, now I know....

WOW! any chance for a webcast of it/video capture please =]
anyhow, if i knew about this trophy, i would have designed a speedy robot just for that!
15-04-2008 19:00
Kristian CalhounAt 27 ft/s, I'd probably have to place my bet on Team 102, The Gearheads.

So Andy, how well do your omniwheels handle on asphalt at high speeds?
I think FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge could double as "extreme product testing"
15-04-2008 19:39
Jeff Rodriguez
How will you determine who's the fastest robot?
Also, what will the actual drag surface be? I imagine it's going to be on the road that runs through the park, but will they bring out carpet for it or will it be on the pavement?

Akash RastogiI'm deffinitly going with the gearheads ftw on this one. team 102 has a robot our team affectionately named "Splungy," "Speedy," and "Speedy Gonzales."
Gearheads ftw
15-04-2008 20:01
=Martin=Taylor=I'll bet on 968/254. I believe their top speed is around 20 fps. and with six motors it doesn't take long to reach that speed

Precision Guessworks Team 1646 would love to get a shot at that beautiful trophy but either way this race will be awesome and I hope to be present when it happens.

I think this award should go to the team it's named after
LOL!!! but yes... 27fps is what our lil bot does... geared for 30fps but hey, we can't expect everything to go 100%
lol

I have a feeling that this is going to come down to the same thing that wins real drag races, acceleration (and solid driving). I don't care what your bot is geared to run at, if mine can reach top speed faster I'll beat you there.
15-04-2008 22:23
Qbranch
So, I'll take that as yes, you don't need an operator, you can run autonomous control of your robot?

jwfossnote to self, build fastest bot, with crazy acceleration for next year...
no seriously though, that is a really cool trophy

Actually what wins drag races is the ability to transfer the power to the track. Smoke your tires and your race is over. That is why lane choice is critical. I have a feeling that moving these bots from carpet to asphalt/concrete will create some surprising results. I think this might be part of Andy’s challenge.

I was factoring that into acceleration, as you can't accelerate very well without traction in a wheeled vehicle.
![]() Perhaps I should have worded that better, I didn't mean the radial acceleration of the wheels, I meant the linear acceleration of the robot/car as a whole. |

Sorry Sean, maybe I should have worded my post better as well. I meant to imply that robots that do well on carpet might not do quite as well on asphalt/concrete.

AndyHCool trophy and great idea. Sadly team 1098 did not quite make the championship. We tried to have a speed grudge match at the St Louis regional but couldn't get it together. I am glad you got this orginized.
Our bot has seen plenty of asphalt during testing. In fact the school parking lot was covered with salt from a early February ice storm, the first time we did high speed runs outside (we has to replace the drive chains because of all the salt) and it did chew up the tires pretty fast.
Have fun, wish we could attend!!!
We hope to attend IRI and will race anyone there.

cwood1629 "advertised" top speed is 29 ft/s but i haven't actualy seen it move at that speed during a match. Mosty due to lack of space but we will see at Champs

More then likely it did. 1646 was asked to attend but we did not attend the party so we were unable to attend.

More importantly, Dean Kamen won the "fan favorite" award, which was given to the crowds' favorite robot. If i remember correctly, Dean's time was 11.12 seconds.
There were many people recording the races, so I'm sure someone will share some video eventually. |

seems like dean is starting to have a bit more fun now. Between joking around in speeches, being on Colbert numerous times, and this, it's showing more of a fun side of him.

I'm a little confused.
Team 102- 4.43 seconds. Dean- 11.12 seconds. Then why in the video do they look about 1 second apart? |
