Paul Copioli, winner of the 2009 IRI "Kiss The Pig" contest, collects his reward. The loser of the contest is also in the photo, right in front of Andy. So is Aidan Browne, who had to hold the pig. (ba-dum-bump!
)
You just have to love Baker's expression. He is encouraging the pig to have the proper pucker.

p.s. caption contest, anyone?

Michael HillDid anyone happen to question whether the pig WANTED to be kissed? I mean...if that were a human, there would be SO many harassment charges filed.

Pucker Power!
Dr. Brown looks awesome in pink, following the 'dress for success' tip - always wear pink when holding a pig - the rest will take care of itself.
Oscar was so cute.

I think Paul took my advice about "trying to put lipstick on a pig" a little too seriously.

The opera ain't over 'til the fat lady sings, and IRI ain't over 'til the pig gets kissed.

It hasn't been stated whether Paul gets immunity next year (not from pig germs, from a repeat performance).

Fultz, for some reason, named it "Oscar". However, the 2 fine ladies at Geist Animal Hospital (where it stayed for 2 days) named it "Suzy Q".

Now, now... hang on a sec. While this was a good thing, there is no definite kissing of pigs next year. This might have been a one-time thing. The IRI planning committee is commissioning a special focus group to investigate alternative and unique fund raisers. In the mean time, you can google "cow pie bingo" for one of the ideas.

6. People were saying that we should let the pig run around the playing field. I said "no way... that would be funny for about 1 minute, and then frustrating for the next 20 minutes".

AliviaThanks for uploading the picture. I was at IRI but unfortunately ended up missing this moment!
As far as a funny caption for this photo:
Oscar (to Paul) : Don'tcha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?!
Disclaimer: I've never actually seen Paul's significant other, but I'm sure she's real pretty. Just thought it'd be a funny caption!

2. The pig came from my step-father's farm in Monticello. He did not want it back, and saw it as a donation. Like many farmers, if livestock leaves their property, they don't want it to return, in fear of disease that could infect their inventory.

Whew! I think you've all gone off the deep end! So while most of me is very sad that I didn't make it to IRI this year, there is a tiny part that is very relieved that I still have my sanity!

Heavens, there is SO much to know about swine!
Extrapolating from 2005 figures shown at the link Andy provided above, it appears that global stock now exceeds one billion pigs, and that more than half of them are in China. Who knew? |

I just got a Suzy Q pig update from my friend.
Suzy Q is now living at a house with 8 acres of land, as I mentioned previously. 4 kids are in the family, with the oldest being 10. Suzy Q runs around with the 2 farm dogs, and now does not mind being picked up by the kids. She has become "one of the dogs", and follows them around the property. She already knows where to get water and food, and even relieves herself in the same spot.
She knows her name, and comes when she is called. The new owner says that she is smarter than any dog he has seen at her age. He is saying that it may be interesting to bring Suzy Q back to IRI next year so everyone can see how she has grown. By that time, she would probably weigh over 250 pounds... but I am not sure since she spends all day running around with the dogs. She may gain weight at a slower rate than a regular feeder pig, which is confined to a 10x20 pigpen.
I've asked for pictures of Suzy Q with the 2 dogs. They cuddle. I think that this will be a continuing story.

Bob Steele[quote=Elgin Clock;758073]So, what's a male pig called that's not casterated, but not a proud Daddy yet?
Ya know, those crazy years, when they go off on their own seeking adventure, maybe joining a FIRST team (1902?), going off to college, then building houses out of straw, sticks, & bricks all the while dodging wolves, but at the same time just not quite ready to settle down with a little piggy family yet? LOL
Just curious. There seems to be a huge gray area of missing time for that poor piggy when it's lost & confused as to who he really is.
Do I smell the making of an ABC Family Channel sitcom?*
A male pig that has not been castrated is called "Lucky" but he is always looking over his shoulder...

It's time for a Suzy Q update.
Shortly after the 2008 IRI, Suzy Q was moved to Peru, Indiana, and lived in the yard of a rural home. Suzy Q ran with the dogs and minded the owners until she got big and started destroying some things. During these last 10 months, Suzy Q has grown to be a hefty gilt at about 350 pounds. She has stayed in a pen for the last 5-6 months.
This past weekend, Suzy Q got out of her pen (350 pounds of pure muscle is not easy to contain) and rambled over to the neighbor's yard. After getting Suzy Q back in her pen, the owners have realized that she is just too big for them to handle.
Yesterday, the owners were very close to contacting me, as I have offered to buy the pig back and take it to a processing plant (sausage, bacon, chops, etc.). HOWEVER... this same family went to the feed store last night and met a kind lady who is willing to let Suzy Q live on her farm in Amboy, Indiana.
So, the good news is that Suzy Q moved from Peru to Amboy and will live with another pig, 2 goats, a few dogs, and a horse.
The bad news is that the Bakers will need to go to the grocery store for more bacon.
