How do you scare the bejeepers out of 2 mechanical engineers?
Put them on the X-Scream ride on the top of the Stratosphere in Las Vegas and they start to wonder about the limited mechanical and electrical systems that keep them from plunging 1,000 feet to the streets below.

We went there last year and could not overcome the engineer's grasp of probability.....so we stayed off the rides. But we did have fun looking at the structures.

Such things scare us mere mortals as well. That's why I stay off of things like that.

Is it that you don't trust magnetism, Andy, or is that you don't trust the bolts holding the magnets in place?

This should be renamed how to scare anybody. Did you guys go on any of the other rides?

I'm sure if you think that's too scary, then you won't be trying this one any time soon:

Think bungee jumping, but without the cord.
Since I've already done bungee jumping, this one is def. on on my to-do list.
Someday... Now just to figure out how & when to make it to Wisconsin.
Oh, the X-Scream is also on my list.
Yeah, I'm a bit of an adrenaline junkie.
Edit:
And.. Ahahahhahaha! Nice Sputnik shirt.woot.com shirt there!

Andy was not wearing a Star Trek shirt. However, on a curiously related note, ask Greg where he went right after the trip to the top of Stratosphere... (I wouldn't go with him this year either. The idea of the NASA guy wandering through the Star Trek Experience was just a touch too nerdy, even for me).

KF987The x scream has been stuck twice hanging over the side of the stratosphere here in vegas a couple of times. The only reason i will not go on the ride...

Can we change the focus of this thread back to Andy and how he almost wet his pants on those 3 rides?

Wayne C.if you really want to scare them drop a handful of chopped up bolts in the bottom of the ride just before they get in dont "NOTICE THEM " until the restraining bar is down and the ride is starting to move.
(DON'T ACTUALLY TRY THAT- GOD KNOWS WHAT THEY MIGHT FOUL UP)

JB987On a related note...it was a pleasure to share a beverage or two with you guys last Friday, and a thousand thanks, Andy, for hand delivering the beta test plaction wheels! And all we had to do was offer you an opportunity to see Greg pee his pants...but now we hear it was the other way around???
This thread reveals just a small subset of the many great reasons to come out to our regional, and Team 987 welcomes everyone to "try their luck" at our 5th regional...

Ah, so that's what it's been all my life - that rational knowledge of the way welds break, fasteners fail with cyclic loading, strength of materials, faulty slide rules, and so on. And, that's from an electrical guy...
There are SO many ways to kill yourself, and maybe even have fun doing it, that a roller coaster (one nightmare) atop a tall building (another nightmare - I have several) would simply make me pass out before anything could happen.

Meanwhile, those of us stuck back on terra firma were off having other adventures like this.

My wife and I were in Vegas a few years back. We rode the roller coaster at the top of the Stratosphere. What a ride
I had no intention of going on the ones that put you over the edge of the Sphere.
We also did the ST experience. There was a ST convention going on thet we didn't know about
We would have loved to bring our uniforms with us (See WAI) I loved the announcement when you arrived at the hotel on the monorail. They used a Borg voice.
We also did the back stage tour.

As someone that worked for a traveling midway for two years (#1 man on a '63 Herrshan Skywheel thats the big yellow double ferris wheel) all I can say is you guys are nuts... I'd never go on any ride unless I put it up. And one on top a building? NO WAY!
Thankfully what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas

IKESome friends and I went to Cedar point a couple weeks back. While I truly enjoyed all of the rides, the pictures would have appeared to be a mix between horror and me being tortured.
Overall a great trip and we figured out how to ride the MeanStreak without it beating you up.
I think our next outing will have to be NJ to ride the King...

I always thought that the best way to ride Mean Streak without getting beaten up was not to ride it at all.
