That sound you just heard was me.

My first thought was: "AAugh!"
My second was: "Looks like 2006 with a different hopper and a redesigned shooter."
My third was: "Oh, NO!!"

My goodness, I knew there was a reason to stay up past midnight besides work.
I especially loved the moment at 1:34, why do I have the feeling I will see that move executed time in, time out, over and over, and why do I also have the feeling that it's already been done time in, time out. Haha!
Looks amazing as always Karthik, Can't wait to see it in action in person.

It's official. I'll see you guys next Saturday... I just got my bus tickets.
Looking good 1114!

p.s. Did I notice some auto camera tracking going on in the video?
19-02-2009 00:40
Ice BergIs that an extra lens on the camera?
Everything looks amazing! This is the first turreting shooter that seems to consistently make shots. Great job!
19-02-2009 00:45
JetwebFinally!!! a video of a shooter that works! That thing looks devastating, well done.
Mind telling us what type of lens that is on the camera? Im guessing its a wide angle.

Karthik, major props man. This is exactly what I wanted to build this season, except we didn't get the camera to track (still need to get it working) as well as you guys did. Loving the amount of chain and the hidden chain runs. Did you guys find a way of tensioning the very small runs. BTW, the floating sprocket seemed to work very well. Can't wait to play against you guys this year.
19-02-2009 00:49
JVNI'm fairly certain this is what half of FIRST thought they were building this season. I guess we'll see how many others can live up to this one. To see this robot in action is mind-blowing. Another elegant Simbot design proves to everyone how it should be done. I'm loving the fact that this thing will be in the hands of one of FIRST's best drivers. Game on.
You can always tell the really quality robots, because they're the ones that makes you depressed.
I love you guys. Good luck in Chicago.

Fantastic robot, a wonderful demonstration (yet again) of the optimum FIRST robot for the given game. The video also demonstrated why I think turreted shooters will do well this year... note how they can pin a robot and score into it's trailer. Actually, they just need to be near another robot to score in it's trailer, but you get the idea.
What's powering the shooter? That's an insane fire rate!
19-02-2009 00:53
Ian Curtis
Wow! That is super impressive! If it's camera code, it's dang sweet, and if it's an operator he/she really knows what's up! I can see 1114 have a clear radius of about 2 robot lengths at all times when they're on the field, you get to close and you'll have a trailer full!

Another amazing robot by the Simbots, you guys continue to impresses me year after year. You manage every year to assemble a talented group of mentors, who inspire smart passionate students to not only create a robot that impresses us all, but a professional TEAM that blows me away.
That's going to be one tough bot to beat with the best Drive Team in FIRST... but that certainly doesn't mean we're not going to try

I can't wait to see 2166's bot. Karthik, any chance of posting up a pic of what they created this year? I like to keep up-to-date with former alliance partners. Many don't know this but a deciding factor in us and Beatty picking 2166 last year on Archi was who they were mentored by (Simbotics) so I'm curious to see what they pulled out this year. Wish them and the NiagraFIRST teams best of luck for me please.

Uberbotsi like the camera tracking turret (:
its scary how accurate that thing is, and unlike dumper robots there is no alignment that you have to do... just jam your robot up close and dump away, 100% accuracy.
i wanna see that turret firing at a moving target

Would all you teams please stop! My chin will be bruised for weeks from dropping on the floor so much.
I am SO glad I'm a referee and not a scorer this year.
I wonder if anyone at Traverse City will be watching the action on the floor, or if they'll all be looking for a webcast from Midwest?
19-02-2009 07:23
Jimmy NicholsKarthik, awesome bot as usual. Too bad I won't get to see it in person, unless we qualify and raise the funds for Atlanta. 1038 has a bit of a fiscal problem that we are having to work through this year, so we are only able to attend one regional, Buckeye.
Good luck!

astephen68Wow amazing looking robot. Good luck at the Midwest regional.

Wow, another great robot that will certainly be one of the best, if not thee best in the field. I don't know what else to say but that the rest of us at Midwest will have to sharpen our pencils on strategies to beat this firepower.
Luckily, for the rest of us, the robot's effectiveness in scoring only accounts for what in my opinion is about 1/3 of the formula it will take to win.

I had the privilege of seeing some of the development of the 1114 robot during the build season. From where it was in week 2-3 to ship is an astounding development that surely was a ton of work to get things to where they are. Congrats to 1114 for their perseverance and to 148/IFI for their support. Can't wait to see you guys in person in Atlanta!

Great robot, 1114; I love the sheet metal work.
I can't want to see your robot compete this year, as that pin-and-fire routine looks deadly.
// Now onto a side note:
I find it funny that when most people see videos of 148 or 254 or 1114 or 217, they get scared or begin doubting their own design decisions. When I see videos like this, I see a challenge. It's like someone egging me on. As a result, it really helps me come up with better (although minor) design revisions. I'd really like to thank these teams for their inspiration!

If so, how well does it do against moving trailers? What's the range?

Totally with you there Art, I got the chance to see initial rendition of this bot a couple weeks ago and I had the exact same reaction. It challenged me to work harder on our bot to make it more effective. I am still thinking of how we can make our bot better, the robot is never 'done' there is always something that can be done to improve it.

Sheet metal frames for the win. 612 just switched over to using a sheet metal frame on our drive train and after seeing how much it weighed, we aren't going back. Now we just need to implement it throughout the robot for next year.

um...yeah...you keep thinking that. I highly disagree. I mean im not sayin that dumpers are the useless ones. I think they both have their pros and cons. but having a good shooter like 1114 will be an advantage.

2 weeks ago we saw their robot and it was something most teams would be ecstatic to put out on their field. A week ago it was even better. After these redesigns it looks ready to dominate just about everyone out there (and note that they could probably win both their regionals without ever firing a shot from range).
This shows the amount of time and effort they put into their design. Nothing is ever good enough, and they strive for perfection. This mentality is what makes them great year after year. Imagine how good they will be by mid April... |

I think shooters w/ turrets will be more effective in later rounds because all the robots will be moving the entire match and having a turret will help a lot. During qualifications dumpers may score more because teams are moving less & no shows ect...and if you have a dumper and you need to be lined up right on target it may be to late in the match to catch up when you get the opportunity to dump your load.

What motor and gearbox did you use on your shooter?
What motor and gearbox did you use on your collector?
Do you guys shoot at one speed or does it vary depending on the distance?
Is the deflector/backboard on your shooter shooting the balls up, down, or parallel with the robot?

23-02-2009 22:34
roboticWanderorputting this type of robot on a team with a powerful dumper is probably the best strategy i can think of.
imagine this :
a powerful shooter like 1114 or 217 slams a robot up against the wall, t-bone-ing them. A power dumper like 148, 254, 968, etc. brings up the rear with a trailer load of balls to dump in. The pinned robot has almost no where to go and is at least severely impeded. the turret of the shooter can make up for the odd angle of collision, and makes up for their scoring power by giving the dumper a clean shot. the 3rd robot can assist in scoring, or at least provide defense to the scoring robots.
so, all you shooters, and all you dumpers, just hope you can get your alternate on your alliance, team picks this year are looking to be a lot more strategic than just stacking points up. somewhat like 2007 when the lifter was essential to the game breaking win.
i just managed to get this out now because i was watching how 1114 was attacking the trailers in the video, good work guys!

True, dumpers can handle it by themselves. But you have to gather all those balls without getting slammed into the wall by the opponent. I think Lewis has a point, picking alliances this year is gonna matter a tad bit more than last year.
