Well Now What?

Well Now What?

At the field in Manchester this morning one of our shots landed on the ball return for the top goal. There is a small space where you can reach your hand through to poke the ball out but it will mean you are reaching into the field.

If this ball is untouchable we'll be seeing a lot of matches with only 16 balls because this wasn't hard.

My guess is they will either open the hole or give you a tool like they did in 2009 and 2010 to grab dislodged balls.

My guess is the field was incorrectly built, and the GDC are already working on fixing that if their drawings for the fields were incorrect all together. Or you just helped the GDC figure out what they would have figured out in Week 1 and can fix it now to ensure that doesn't happen again. Having that problem is going to make Rule [G37] impossible for the referees and field crew.

<G34> gives sticking your hand into the field a technical foul, so you'd want to find a ref or something about that, I have no idea.

So really what this becomes is a bonus for making a 'swish' into the high goal. Not only do you get 3 points, but your opponents don't get that ball. Awesome!

I wouldn't bet on that--it doesn't look like that ball would have tripped the sensors to count it.

I don't know about the sensors, but points are counted for the balls once they fully pass through the hoop by G38.

But wouldn't you then get a penalty for not returning it? :/

Not at all! Take a look at G31. The ball never makes it to the corral, so it never has to be "removed immediately." There could potentially be 6 balls held by inbounders and an additional one stuck without penalty.

Personally, I'd call this a field fault and replay the match or simply fix it now to stop it from happening again.

Can somebody just verify for me that in this picture that ball got stuck in the return chute just before it gets counted? What I see in the picture (or what I think I see) is the ball was never scored (it never went through the hoop) it just missed the hoop and got stuck underneath the goal just above where the balls return to the corral.

I predict a return of the pokey sticks from 2006...

The ball didn't go in the hoop and return chute in this picture. The ball is sitting on top of the chute

Correct, I had to shrink the image because of CD's size limit. The ball is sitting on top of the return chute just under where the hoop is mounted.

Again this was my second shot and I saw a few others land in the same area during the morning.

I'd rather put them in my lane than do that. 18 balls means if each robot has 3 there are none on the field or inbounders.

Any ball you get is a gift so starving in this game is realistically collecting your 3.

A ball doesnt count unless it makes it through the entire hoop. this hasnt completed the motion.

This isn't a scored ball, this is a stuck ball on top of the ball return and the only way to get it down is through a hole.

Balls also got stuck between the netting and the backboards. I was assured by FIRST staffers that field reset crews will have implements to dislodge balls that get stuck like this during a match. Train your human players not to interfere with these balls, it is a penalty. Leave it to the field crews to get the balls reintroduced to play.

The alley is not impassable by the opposing. It is only opposing robots in the opponent's alley that you must avoid per <G28>. So if there are no opposing robots on your offensive side, you can quite safely and immediately retrieve any balls dropped out the feeder slot (keeping in mind human players may hold six in total).

This is a stuck ball. It may take the ball out of play, but otherwise, there is no problem. Every robot on the field now has to deal with the situation of having only 17 balls to score with. If the field crew can deal with it, they will, if not, then everyone plays with fewer balls, but no one on the field gets an advantage by that.

Same as when tubes got stuck on nets and poles last year.

Sorry, I too often have to catch myself confusing the alley for a feeding lane. Too many clauses to me. I'm too used to red tape for red alliance bots only and blue tape for blue alliance robots.
