We use Mountain Dew cans as heat syncs on our motors!

This isn't very effective. The entire point of a heat sink is to maximize surface area for convective heat transfer. You have a minutely larger surface area with a soda can attached as compared to the case diameter of the motor.

But the sugar residue that makes its way into the motor will make it go faster right?

Seriously, I think he was joking.

Called the big CIM a "Coke can motor" by mistake the other day. The students looked at me like I had three heads.

I will now do this so they understand my lingo.

When talking to people who don't know the FRC lingo, I call CIM's "soda can motors".

Well, he did say it was a "heat sync".

Why they are trying to synchronize the heat in their motors is a bit beyond me...

Even heat is very important for cooking competition pit pancakes.

Just add a layer of duct tape or gaffers tape to the case of the motor and the can fits quite snug and well around it.
