CRTE Encoder mount #nostandoff

Decided to try out some CRTE encoder, so I whipped out a few mounts on the CNC. Got the part run time down to 3.2 minutes of spindle on time with both ops.

For some reason the CRTE encoder uses a 3-48 machine screw to mount, finding a tap for that was amusing.

Would this be a part you would consider using on a competition robot, or was it just CNC practice? Encoder mounts have been something we've considered a perfect application for 3D printing (saves weight, mill time, and potentially cost depending on how you source your filament).

If you want to see an even sillier CNC part, we made this CUI encoder mount out of 7075 because we didn't have a 3d printer at the time. Took about 15 minutes from design to finished part, probably faster than you could 3d print it (I'd still rather 3d print it).

(7075 was scrap from sponsors)

That's a really nice mount. I hate the 3-48 screw/tap though, I think it's possible to swap it for a 2-56 but I'm not too sure.

Funnily enough the team does not own a 3D printer... With the in house CNC it really doesn't take much time to crank a few of these out. Depending on how things go I would totally just crank a few of these during build season.

I would not want a 2-56..... i would prefer bigger like a 4-40.

1836 Has found that with a slight interference fit you can just force the screw straight into the plastic. In season I'd probably use some adhesive to make sure the thread stayed in but forcing the screws in lasted all of Madtown and drive practice with no issues what-so-ever. That being said, if 2485 doesn't have a 3d printer I'll just stop talking.

Don't get me wrong this is a perfect application of 3D printing, and it will probably work great as a 3D printed part.

I just like doing things a bit over the top when we have the resources

We had many issues with the encoder alignment. We printed probably 6 different encoder mounts tweaking each one a 10/1000 or so until it worked. We thought there must be something wrong because I never heard anyone make comments about this but we did. We got it working but we were glad we could just edit CAD and hit print.

Has anyone has issues with getting these mag encoders in alignment? The green lights are very helpful.

We had a similar issue on the first run of our encoder mounts. I adjusted the design so that it was very clearly undersized and we added washers one by one until the light became green.

We made our own 3D printed mounts for Mag Encoders this year as well (actually the versa-planetary encoders, which are the same thing with a plastic gear attached). We found the best way to make it work every time was to insert a plastic shim between the encoder housing and the magnet, and then build a bit of springiness into the mount so that it pressed the housing against the shim. This is the same way the versa planetary encoders are made.

If you go this route, take care to add a bit of grease between the spinning magnet and the plastic shim, or else it will melt in a hurry at high speeds. Ask me how I know

We just followed the spec in the manual for spacing. The shaft was reamed out to a precise depth to hold the magnet, and then the encoder mount seen above was machined to a specific size. All of this was done in CAD and the numbers worked out in real life.

It was machined from a piece of bar stock that was taller so i had something to hold it in the vice with, then flipped over and faced off with a pair of aluminum soft jaws.

Are the four holes to allow for multiple options for orientations of the senor module?
How do you establish the magnet to encoder gap?

With the CTRE mount I designed for use with the WCP Flipped DS, I included a tool to setting the depth of the magnet in the end of the shaft.

Yep! instead of making and left and a right one, i figured I might as well put all the holes in all of them.

It was just designed in CAD and machined to a fairly tight tolerance so no adjustment was needed. The shaft was reamed to a precise depth, and so were the pegs on this part.

Our encoders configuration on the boxes used the old discontinued Tough box nano gearbox system. We downloaded the step file on Andymark for the trusty E4T encoders. Imported it into inventor created the stl and print. We may have had to shim the magnet with paper but was painless.
