Very nice wiring layout. 2386 did something similar but the board is horizontal rather than vertical and “only” ten SRX’s. I’ll try to grab some pics of it tomorrow night.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but last year we wired our electronics board very similar to this and a judge dinged us for it. We only had 10 Talons (never thought I would be saying ONLY 10 Talons but here we are...), but the judge alerted us to the fact that wiring that many high-current wires close together can cause the creation of an electromagnetic field when powered on that can interfere with other wires nearby. In fact, we had issues previously with small "blips"—unexplained robot movement, but since these "blips" were always extremely brief, rare and seemingly idiopathic, we didn't worry about them too much. I was taking physics at the time, and his explanation (the details of which escape me now) did line up with what I had just learned. Needless to say, we will be spacing out our Talons this year.

I'm not saying it's necessary to change it and it does look great, But if you get a judge who wires things professionally, you may get a comment.

Running high current DC near untwisted signal wires can induce spurious interference in the signal line, which is why Bell Labs researched twisted pair lines.

The signal line acts as a long wire antenna.

Congratulation! That is a very nicely laid out electronics panel and very nicely done wiring.

3360 has done it right. All of the courses I have attended and the textbooks I have for mitigating electromagnetic interference all say to do it the way they have done it.

Theoretically, the power wires will radiate a magnetic field. In reality, 3360's wiring practices should not cause problems.

The signal wires are running perpendicular to the power wires. That is the recommended way to route power and signal wires that must run near each other to minimize electromagnetic coupling. The signal wires appear to be run as twisted pair. Twisted pair greatly attenuates any interference by causing it to largely cancel itself. The CAN Bus devices have also been designed to very tolerant of induced noise.

Magnetic coupling is maximized when wires are run parallel to each other. The magnetic field strength is inversely proportional to the cube of the distance so even small spacings will attenuate the magnetic coupling dramatically. The wires are all far too short to be effective antennas at the switching frequency of the motor controller (and the higher power harmonics) so they would be very ineffective antennas in terms of radiating the magnetic flux and absorbing it. Thus, the impedance coupling the magnetic energy from one wire to the next is very high, say in the MegOhms or greater. The power circuits are all pretty low impedance, say a few Ohms or less. One can then think of these two impedances forming a divider circuit with a divide ration in the range of millions to one, or higher. The small amount of energy that does get coupled from one power wire into another is not going to circuit like a motor controller in any significant way. It would take a lot of radiated energy to have any significant effect, more than realistically can be generated in an FRC robot. This also means that it should be fine to place motor controllers right next to each other.

I suspect 1711's blips were more likely to be due to poor connections in some of the wiring than any form of electromagnetic interference.
