Im not sure. I wasnt there, but if they were doing it in the pits I cant imagine they were super worried about privacy. They certainly didnt ask the guy filming to stop, look away or go away.
Reguardless, Im not going to lie that looks TERRIFYING. I hope that if they dont deploy them in auton that they have something very good to prevent them from firing unintentionally. A harpoon to the ref is not a good way to make friends on the fields :eek:
Once you step into a public venue it’s fair game.
I want to see how these end up being used come elims. if they reel in the cans thats fine, but if they dont. someone might bring across a souvenir with them when they pull the cans from the other side. Which may result in a red card under the right conditions for the harpoon user. Speculation.

Doubtful, as average still matters. I think they will wait until finals.
I think they might use it for the last semifinal match assuming they have a good average coming into that match.

After 1114 broke in the second round of the semi’s, 900 packed up the robot into the transport configuration… Think we’ll see it in a few minutes?

1114 is back on the field.
My guess is that the Curie alliance knows that they’re likely OK coming out of this match due to the lead they have on 1671/1678/118’s average, but also know that the finals is against the same alliance that broke 1114’s arm.

It looked like they were going to use almost every match. They put it all back in transport config but than took it back out.

I was getting so excited to see them in action, and then my hopes were dashed.
I was thinking about this with my students earlier, and there’s a pretty substantial difference between the pole/hooks and these harpoons. While you’re correct that a failure can cause the poles to become projectiles, the hooks are projectiles by default. It’s not an issue if they hit their target (the hole in the cans), but it can be if they do not. The poles’ motion is constrained if they miss the mark, but the harpoons might ricochet. Presumably 1114 took great care to align them to avoid the issue, but if there was a device that was faster is could potentially introduce a projectile with a lot of unconstrained energy.
I was actually surprsied it only came oaround this race. The arms race accelerated pretty slowly (thank goodness).
As a home observer I’m more curious as to whether the harpoon platforms also winched the cans in, or if it was more of a “Noone uses these cans, you have to outstack us” nuclear option for finals?
