It looks like team 900’s new robot is ready to go… And I happen to know that it HAS passed inspection!
Doubtful, as average still matters. I think they will wait until finals.
I think they might use it for the last semifinal match assuming they have a good average coming into that match.
It will be 1114 vs 1678 for SF-6
We may be much more likely to see it now with 1114’s SideSwipe-mounted canburglar all twisted up after that last match.
After 1114 broke in the second round of the semi’s, 900 packed up the robot into the transport configuration… Think we’ll see it in a few minutes?
Sure looks like 1923/1114/148 on the field to me…
1114 is back on the field.
My guess is that the Curie alliance knows that they’re likely OK coming out of this match due to the lead they have on 1671/1678/118’s average, but also know that the finals is against the same alliance that broke 1114’s arm.
End of match edit: SHEEESH. It RTS is right, it will be super close on the averages.
Scored edit: Ow. 1.6 points.
Looks like they won’t get a chance to show off the new 900.
It looked like they were going to use almost every match. They put it all back in transport config but than took it back out.
Can’t wait to see an improved version at IRI!
I was getting so excited to see them in action, and then my hopes were dashed.
I was thinking about this with my students earlier, and there’s a pretty substantial difference between the pole/hooks and these harpoons. While you’re correct that a failure can cause the poles to become projectiles, the hooks are projectiles by default. It’s not an issue if they hit their target (the hole in the cans), but it can be if they do not. The poles’ motion is constrained if they miss the mark, but the harpoons might ricochet. Presumably 1114 took great care to align them to avoid the issue, but if there was a device that was faster is could potentially introduce a projectile with a lot of unconstrained energy.
I was actually surprsied it only came oaround this race. The arms race accelerated pretty slowly (thank goodness).
As a home observer I’m more curious as to whether the harpoon platforms also winched the cans in, or if it was more of a “Noone uses these cans, you have to outstack us” nuclear option for finals?
We thought it was the latter but apprently there is a winch on them.
I didn’t see 900 up close in its final form, but this was in 1114’s pit Saturday morning, so I’m assuming some kind of winching was incorporated.
There was an incorporated winch… But no way to remove the harpoons from the cans that I could see, short of brute force. I’m pretty sure it was a purely defensive live-action designed to ensure the other alliance did not get the cans and had to stack perfectly.
