Hello everyone,
The F4 CADathon GDC is pleased to announce that we will be hosting our 12th CADathon from 6pm Eastern on Friday, December 16th - 11pm Friday, December 23rd.
For those unaware, a CADathon is like a hackathon but with CAD. People/teams are given a short period of time to CAD a specific thing (in this case a robot) ending with a panel of judges selecting a winner. If you would like to see information about prior events, here are the threads from our second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, 8.5th, ninth, tenth, and eleventh CADathons.
Team information:
-
The CADathon duration is 1 week.
-
There will be no limit to CADathon team size if and only if everyone on the CADathon team is a member of the same FIRST (FRC etc.) team.
-
For CADathon teams with members of different FIRST teams, teams may be composed of up to three participants, with limited exceptions as specified below.
-
If you are competing solo, but would like to be assigned up to 2 random partners, you can sign up as a “random” in the signup form and we will do our best to match you with a partner using the same software and in a similar time zone.
Teams composed of more than three unaffiliated students are allowed at the discretion of the organizers, with the primary intent of making learning opportunities for new designers more accessible. These will be handled on a case by case basis, and you must contact us before participating in this manner.
We do not have any requirements of participants other than the basic requirements of being willing to participate and having access to CAD software of their choice. Any age, student or not, whether you’ve never done any sort of CAD before or have been designing robots for a decade, are invited to put their skills to the test. If that sounds like you, please sign up below
Submission requirements:
-
For non-Onshape software
-
CAD files in a neutral format (STEP, Parasolid)
-
Native CAD files if using non-Onshape software
-
Submitted via GrabCAD Workbench or Community
-
-
For Onshape
- A link to an Onshape document with downloads turned on
-
Any renders of the robot
-
A “pit scouting” document used to explain the design to the judges
-
All files unless otherwise mentioned must be received prior to 11PM on Friday, December 23rd
-
Renders may be submitted or added to the submission until 8PM, Monday the 26th
All files will be checked by the CADathon staff in order to ensure compliance with the rules. Failure to comply with the rules may result in penalties up to and including points or disqualification.
The Judging Process
The following process is used in order to judge the teams: The submissions will be split amount our judges evenly. The judges will score their assigned submissions, and the top teams from their pool will be judged by the other judges. All teams will receive feedback from at least one judge, unless they indicate a preference not to receive feedback.
We are actively looking for judges. If you are interested in being a judge, please complete the judge form here:

The soft deadline for signups is December 15th at noon. We do allow late signups during the event, but please sign up as soon as you decide to participate.
Regardless of what type of team you are (solo, 3 person, FIRST team, etc), ONLY 1 MEMBER OF EACH TEAM SHOULD COMPLETE THE SIGNUP FORM.
If you are competing as a FIRST team, and a member of your team has previously competed in CADathon, the team may use that member’s CADathon team number if they wish, by selecting the “existing team” option:
