EVIDENCE THAT OPEN SHARING WORKS: THE FADING OF SIDE/SIDE SHOOTER WHEELS

I wanted to point out that the evidence on CD, the main FRC discord, and other sources strongly suggests that Open content (OA or otherwise) has had a strong impact on teams making good design choices when it matters. Specifically, I have seen an evolution of shooter designs from the side/side roller to the top/bottom roller. Some examples from OA blog posts:

6647 Voltec
6925 Woodward
4481 Rembrandts

1339 started with side/side shooter wheels (sometimes called vertical or “hamburger”) and also found through our testing that these were less effective than top/bottom (horizontal or “hot dog”). But we were deeply influenced by the public work of other teams who pioneered prototyping. We are especially grateful to teams 3847, 95, 4481, and 6328 for publishing so frequently and with such high quality work. We and many other teams are deeply in debt to you and we are very grateful.

1339’S ROBOT

Our current design, which is in production as a final drive base and elevator, and on which we expect to continue iterating the intake and shooter. Our CAD is always open for anyone who wishes to see it in detail.

Fully enclosed (26" tall):

Drive Base:

Mid-Bumper Intake (full credit to team 95 for the idea):

Decoupled L/R Top/Bottom Shooter and Indexer (95 again, and 6328):

Elevator, STAGE Reaction Roller Frame, and Judi Climb (some parallels with 7407 and 3847, thanks y’all):
