We have been doing some organizing and a thought came to me.
As a veteran team we will not be receiving the pump, joysticks or charger. I think it would be fair if FIRST allowed us to use some of the now obsolete parts we have.
In particular, I would like to see the 883 Victor speed controllers allowed. A limited quantity and restriction to 30 amp Circiuts would be OK. At $100+ each they would offset the cost of buying the non-supplied items.
I thought we already could use electrical components from years past. If not, then I think you’re right. We spent lots of money to get extra relays and speed controllers, and it seems silly to have to buy them all over again just because we get an upgraded part.
You can (at least last year) use old electrical components. However, you could not use the older 883 Victors. They were replaced by the Victor 884 (smaller deadband, 40amp vs 30amp breaker) in 2003. In 2002, the 884s were optional, then in 2003 they removed the 883 as a legal part.
I doubt that FIRST will reallow something that they replaced with an upgraded part.
I agree with lesser electronics restrictions. With the internet you can get just about anything. We wanted to use this camera we found but it has never been legal. Price limit is a must however.
