2011 E09 Restore Key: Win Update not working

Wondering if anyone might know what might cause this.

(2012 E09 USB restore key doesn’t work as per other posts)

Used 2011 E09 USB to restore a 2011 Win 7 image to a new hard drive in our E09 Classmate. 2011 Win activation script appeared to work. But Windows update reports it can not work as the Windows Update service is not running. But when I look in services, it is started and running (and I stopped it and restarted it too, rebooted etc etc) but still the same Win Update message. Reinstalled twice with the same outcome.

Any ideas ?
Is it true if in general Win 7 is not activated, Win Update is disabled ?

You might think the game this year is basketball related, but it is really successfully installing Win 7 on a Classmate.

It worked for us…
I just hit the F11/F12 key on the 2GO boot screen, and selected the USB drive.

If you need help, just PM me.

I think you may misunderstand me. We were able to install Win 7 off the USB key via F11, boot off key but once Win 7 was installed and up and running, I tried to use “Windows Update” to download all the (security related) patches. It was at that point a message said Windows Update service was not running but the service was running. So I don’t know if I have a damaged install and I am not too happy about not being able to update Win 7 with the current updates.

We have a bit of time as I am pretty certain the driver station stuff will work and if it doesn’t, I can install it on an alternative laptop. Hopefully First will come up with a solution for the 2012 USB key problem (that is not based on using my suspect 2011 install).

This is weird, our driverstation works perfectly for us. Did you try restarting the computer?? and also, make sure you are connected to the Internet.

Yes this is weird. Especially since another team apparently successfully installed Win 7 (with Win Updates working) off the exact 2011 key before they gave it to us. The only difference is they installed on the original 16gb SSD while we installed on a brand new replacement hard drive we installed to replace the SSD.

Yes, the internet worked (online activation and browsing works). The rest of Win 7 looks normal so far (though the desktop is black (no desktop image selected I presume).

Multiple boots, multiple reinstalls.

wait…so if you activated and it runs, then what is the issue???
it should auto-update, just shutdown and it will apply updates.

It sounds to me like your issue is unique from the issues others are having with the E09 USB keys.

My guess would be that your issue is related to the replacement hard drive. Images like the one provided by FIRST are designed to run on the exact same hardware.

I would try uninstalling any hard drive or storage drivers like Intel Storage Matrix Technology (I don’t have access to our E09 right now or I’d be more specific). Reboot and try Windows Update again.

Its not autodownloading. I should also be able to force it to check for updates and and when I do, that’s when it says it is unable to as the service is not running. I also gave it a day/time to autodownload and nothing happened when the time went by.

…very weird. Hmmm and your classmate is connected to the Internet while you try this??? Have you kept it connected to the Internet for a period of time to allow it to attempt to download?
