2016 Championship Division Notifier- get a text or email when divisions are released

divisions.co

I’ve made a lot of updates to the division notifier website for the 2016 FRC World Championship. Over 900 division notification text messages were sent last year to people from almost 350 different teams.

New features this year:

  • Email notifications, with several options
  • Push notifications through the Android app
  • View recent changes to the registration list
  • Download division data as a CSV file
  • Production tier infrastructure and hosting
  • A simple API

As usual, there will be lots of data and charts on the site once divisions are released. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

If using Android, is there a way to get a push notification for a specific team through the app?

Not currently. It sends the push notification once when the first team receives a division.

Very cool. I do not have any teams attending championships, but I am curious about multiple teams. Is there any ways I can get multiple teams to the same phone number?

You could just choose one team and sign up for a text message, then check the website after you get that notification to see all the teams you’re interested in.

Email notifications are the only type where you can specify a list of teams to be notified about currently.

So far, 184 people have registered for text notifications and 85 for email.

Just about 2 weeks to go until the expected release of divisions and less than 3 weeks until worlds!

I’ve added a couple charts to the site including an OPR histogram and championship team location maps: frc.divisions.co/charts

If anyone has any other charts they’d like to see let me know.

made my day

I signed up for text message, but my team is not going to Championship. I just want to know when the list comes out. Since the team number I entered won’t be on the list, does that mean I won’t get a message at all?

You’ll get a generic message when the first teams receive divisions.

With all pre-championship matches complete, I’ve added a simple auto-checker to the main page of the site. If you’re feeling impatient, just stare at the site for hours on end- no refreshing required.

How do you tell when my team gets assigned?

Last year, I believe the division lists were announced the Wednesday before Championship. So if HQ were to follow suit, the announcement would be on or near 4/20 this year. Of course, an earlier release would be swell.

In 2002 through 2004 the divisions were released the Tuesday 9 days before the beginning of the championship. That ended up ranging anywhere from before the last regional ended (2003) to 10 days after the last regional ended (2002).

In 2005, the divisions were released on a Monday, 10 days before the beginning of the championship (9 days after the end of the last regionals).

In 2006, the divisions were released on a Friday, 13 days before the beginning of the championship (13 days after the end of the last regionals).

In 2007-2009, the divisions were released on a Wednesday, 8 days before the beginning of the championship (3-4 days after the end of the last regionals).

In 2010, the divisions were released on a Thursday, 7 days before the beginning of the championship (4 days after the end of the last regionals)

In 2011, the divisions were released on a Friday, 13 days before the beginning of the championship (6 days after the end of the last regionals)

In 2012-2015, the divisions were released on a Wednesday, 8 days before the beginning of the championship (4 days after the end of the district championships).

The app checks this list which lists all teams registered for the championship, along with their divisions when they are assigned.

Sorry folks if you received a notification- I think FIRST was testing their division release process and gave one team a test division.

Yeah, we got all excited for a second…

Sorry :frowning:

Testing in production is always exciting.

Although it ended up not being much of a surprise this year, many people still signed up to receive notifications. Divisions were released only a few minutes past the announced time.

Here are some numbers:

  • SMS
    : 974 sent - Email
    : 918 sent - Push
    : 156 sent

The most common teams added to email watch lists:

  • 254
  • 118 people - 1114
  • 108 people - 118
  • 97 people - 2056
  • 95 people

The team who had the most people sign up for notifications was 987.

Let me know if you have any questions or recommendations. Would anyone still be interested in having a notifier next year even if they announce the release ahead of time?
