Insights:
– The last time 125 won a division, they also won the championship. This was in 2001.
– This is the first time 302 has been on Einstein since they won the Newton division in 2003.
– This is 254’s first appearance on Einstein since they won the whole thing in 2014. Including this year, they have a total of 6 Einstein appearances and 2 World Championships - 2011 and 2014.
– This is 67’s first appearance on Einstein since 2014, but their seventh overall appearance. They have already won the World Championship three times, in 2005, 2009, and 2010.
– This is the second Einstein appearance in a row for 1986. Before last year, there had been no Missouri teams on Einstein.
– This is the third Einstein appearance in a row for 2056. Last year they put up a valiant effort in the finals. Will they be able to pull it off this time?
– Team 1511 has also made Einstein two years in a row. With their alliance captain preferring to use 384 in the division playoffs, will Rolling Thunder see the carpet this time around?
– 384 has made it to division finals twice, in 2008 and 2015, but this is their first time on the big stage.
– This is 1241’s first return to Einstein since they won the World Championship in 2013. They were close in 2016, but had to wait another year to punch their ticket.
– There are three Hall of Fame teams on Einstein: 67, 254, and 597.
Props to stellar production quality. Great fancy camera work for show elements but keeping the simple static cams for matches. Props to Solomon for that.
It is definitely looking better than Houston. Matches are happening quickly and we aren’t seeing a largely unrelated competition between long breaks. (I like FTC getting recognition, but it just drew things out last week.)
However, the camera switching is stilll annoying. I really wish they just got the RSN guys to keep doing the stream.
I don’t believe FTC made things take any longer last week. Those games were well organized and went quickly. I believe there was not anytime FRC was waiting on FTC. There were many positive comments that were made from attendees who enjoyed seeing them. Especially those teams who have both a FTC team and a FRC from their area.
If you want to reference what things delayed the games you can include, delaying the event at least an hour because everyone was not in, issues with the sun shining on the FRC Einstein field in Minute Maid park, issues with one of the robots on the FRC field and everything that goes with trying to adjust to a new location.
Some of these delays above were addressed with fill in while waiting on the FRC game to be able to start as observed on the Jumbotron. interviews and so on.
However, someone on the FRC field at the time would need to clarify.
I was one of the many who were thrilled to see FTC on the field last week at finals and I hope FIRST continues to recognize both with this opportunity.
Yeah FTC at Houston was used as filler because of the other problems (mainly, delays due to sun). It’s not a problem with FTC, it’s a problem with the organization and venue at Houston champs.
As an online viewer, I’m loving all the improvements they’ve made for STL, especially showing CCA Finalist videos during downtime and the fixed full-field camera setup for matches.
But you’re right, I’m really sad that I don’t have a single good video of any match my team played on Einstein in Houston. I still don’t know what happened in those matches… #feelingjealous
It sometimes felt like there was a longer-than-normal delay between matches of FRC and FTC as someone watching the stream, and the slower pace of FTC didn’t help. It may be better if each field was ready as soon as the last one was done, and if they worked on an automatic scoring system for FTC so they wouldn’t need to pause.
To be clear, I have nothing against FTC and think it should have equal billing with FRC, but I think it could be pulled off better.
Did anyone else think a rope touched an opposing blue robot at the end of match 12? It would have resulted in an extra climb and the win if it happened and was called.
A rope-only contact in the last 30 seconds of the match is only a foul. It’s only an extra climb if an opposing robot is in contact with the rope or the robot making contact with the rope, AND there aren’t already 3 climbs on that airship.
I will agree that if FTC had an automatic technology generated score system, instead of done manually by the score keepers, it would be an improvement. When I have mentioned this myself, I was told that although FRC has an automatic score system (which was expensive to develop) FTC did not have that opportunity or resources to do so. (This would have to be verified by someone with the official information.) I really enjoyed the visuals of the Steampunk blue airship and red airship on the Jumbotron with the final scores by FRC, and the way we found those out fairly quickly.
The FTC fields were set up in a timely manner and the matches went quickly, but they are smaller, less complicated fields. While the FRC fields were being addressed and robot ready for the next matches the FTC matches were being played. Also, to give enough time for FRC field setups there were interviews, speeches, dance a thons, and team videos.
Thank you for recognizing that FTC teams should have their opportunity for an exciting FINALS venues as well and that the many teams in FRC which also volunteer, mentor, and have students with FTC teams should have an experience where they get to watch those teams succeed as well.
