FRC 1939 is really excited about attending our first St. Louis Regional since 2007! We’ve been to Champs a few times in the last few years and truly enjoy the city as well as the hospitality from the St. Louis area teams. We are looking forward to seeing our friends from around the Midwest as well as some new teams we haven’t met before.
Looks like 7 states are represented:
3 from Alabama
4 from Wisconsin
1 from Iowa
1 from Oklahoma
7 from Illinois
1 from Colorado
35 from Missouri
We have some questions and were hoping to get some answers, and since there didn’t seem to be a thread for this year, I thought I would get one started.
Where can we find detailed competition information? I checked the St. Louis FIRST website and didn’t have much luck.
Is there a team social (other than the bottle flipping contest!)? If so, how do we sign up?
Will match videos of the competition be uploaded to YouTube?
Anything else we should know about coming to the St. Louis Regional?
What do you think about the way the competition is shaping up?
Hey! I can agree that the St. Louis FIRST website isn’t super helpful (at this current time), so, i’ve linked a pdf to the unofficial guide to the St. Louis regional which was created by team 1208- http://othsrobotics.com/pdfs/UnOffGuideYo.pdf . It provides directions to the Chaifetz arena from different sides, the layout of the arena, parking help, metrolink (st. louis metro train) information, hotel information, a few food places, the local hospitals, hardware stores, local target and walmarts, and some outside the regional activities (i recommend going to the city museum as a team activity for when you have time away from the actual event).
The team social is usually on the Friday night of qualifications…I think. The team social is an open event for everyone which is located in on one of the St. Louis University student centers which is about two blocks away. My team just walks from the Chaifetz arena over to the student center since it’s so close. At the team social they provide pizza, soda and water for students and mentors. The team social is held in the upstairs gymnasium where they have tables set up. Students can play ping pong, pickup basketball, soccer and can sit around chat and get to know students from other teams (sometimes people play video games in the lounge area). I’m not sure about the specifications for this year’s team social but I assume you will receive information on it.
For lunch, most teams bring their own food but some teams order food and have it delivered, for example, in the past we have ordered Jimmy John’s sandwiches and some years we’ve simply ordered pizza. The weather has almost always been nice which allows teams to sit outside and around the Chaifetz arena to eat lunch on the stairs and around the arena (i recommend bringing a table to put food on and maybe some chairs even though it isn’t super necessary since you can sit on the stairs, grass and the concrete ledges around the stadium (there are short ledges that face inward to the sidewalk around the arena and stairs that you can sit on).
For dinner options, if you have transportation I recommend checking out the Delmar loop which is a few miles away. The loop has multiple restaurants and fast food places. The loop was voted one of the top ten streets in the country a few years back. A lot of people also go to Pappy’s barbecue (my favorite St. Louis barbecue place is a small place called Vernon’s which is 2 blocks north of the loop). Considering you guys are fro Kansas City i assume you know your barbecue pretty well ha .
i hope this helps! If you have any other questions or if I didn’t make something clear enough, please ask It’s my pleasure to help the Kuhnigits out!
Hey Gavin.
LASER 3284 is excited that 1939 is coming to visit the east side of the state to compete at SLR. One nice thing we were able to do last year was set up pits Wednesday night. With 52 teams the Pit area will be packed. You will get an email from Paul, tourney director with venue and parking information.
He sent the team social info out last week. It is hosted by Saint Louis University. I can forward that to you by email. Give me an email or call for more info. We are thinking about visiting Incredible Pizza on Thursday night with unlimited game pass for 2 hours. It is always fun…
Thanks for the info Mitch, we are working on finalizing some reservations at Incredible Pizza on Thursday night. It will be fun to join you guys. We’re heading to the City Museum on Friday night, so it should be an exhausting but fun trip.
We’re getting really excited about SLR. There are enough teams there that we know that we can kind of feel at home, but there is something special about away regionals. More of a sense of adventure, I guess.
There has not been a Chairman’s Exchange organised in the past. I am sure we could work with the planning committee to make this happen if your team would like to participate. LASER 3284 thinks this would be a good activity to start at MO SLR.
We would love to start that with you guys. I sent the regional director an email but have not heard back. My email is [email protected], shoot me an email and we can try to plan this out.
