It doesn’t look like “nearby” is the proper term.
“In a restricted area” is more accurate.
The E33 change seems problematic.
I normally don’t generate a qualification schedule until all teams have checked in. I don’t think anyone would be happy at a regional if the qual schedule came out at 8:00 AM on Friday.
Of course worse would be generating a qual schedule, distributing it and then having to change it. I had to do that a couple of years ago and there were still people 30 matches in looking at the old incorrect schedule.
I guess this is my Tim Gunn moment, I’ll make it work.
I feel like we used to always get it at 8AM Friday “back in the day.” Usually they would place it in everyone’s pit after everyone left Thursday or hand it out Friday morning. I’d rather get it on Friday than have one change. Way less confusing for everyone.
For the purposes of the FIRST Robotics Competition, any device connected to the OPERATOR CONSOLE is considered a control device because REFEREES are not expected to differentiate between devices that can or cannot control the ROBOT.
Well, at least they didn’t tell me to look it up in the dictionary.
It’s probably hard to come up with universal wording that works for the variety of event types and schedules that exist now. For your typical district event, Noon on “Day 0” is while the field is being set up and well before the pits open for teams, and Noon on “Day 1” is an hour or so after Qualifications start. So the old wording didn’t make any sense anyway.
It seems that the options would be to either (1) Add a separate “check in deadline” to each event’s schedule (meaning inconsistency in minimum time before quals that schedules will be ready), or (2) do something like this where it’s based on a time limit relative to when qualifications start, and that’s the time when schedules are expected to be generated at the latest.
Basically no coaching from the ARCADE floor, even if you have a legal right to be there (TECHNICIAN, media pass, etc), other than DRIVERS,HUMAN PLAYERS and COACHES. Signalling from the stands is still ok. [wanders off muttering about having to rethink status tracking that TECHNICIAN was going to do]
Actually, I haven’t seen any references to dictionaries at all in Q&A yet. There’s just that one reference to an Encyclopedia.
They do seem to be just adding blue boxes as needed. (Though the G14 blue box does refer to a “general definition” of pinning without citing a particular reference.)
I am so glad they are changing this rule. It would seem that now these people are allowed to still do things as long as it doesn’t interfere with the game.
The “no coaching” would only be for people with access to the “arcade”. So for example, typically, only drive team can enter the robot que for a match. However certain people are allowed to follow drive team like this, the person with a media pass for instance.
At a district/some regionals/2017 Huston worlds, this isn’t a big deal, becasue you can litterally just go to the edge of the arcade and talk to drive team. This becomes more important when people who aren’t drive team can’t just walk to the edge of the field. e.g. St. Luis Worlds.
That’s exactly how it used to be done. As years passed, it became possible to get a look at it early through things like the FMS API and its precursors, and the mobile and web apps like Spyder and TBA that feed from them, and event coordinators stopped waiting until the pits were empty to distribute the list.
The way E33 is worded now, there’s nothing stopping you from generating a qualification schedule once all teams have checked in. If they aren’t checking in until the morning qualification matches start at a regional, then their mentors need the RD greeting them in their pit, his or her head cocked to one side as to ask “Why did you think this was a viable plan?”.
The way I see it, there are really two levels of “checked in” - there’s “The garage door was open (I have the frostbite to prove it), they brought in a pit’s worth of stuff, and they’re in their pit now”, and then there’s “Someone came up to Pit Admin to become official”. I’m going to guess you can generate the schedule based on the first, without waiting for the second to happen. And this won’t impact those first conditions, teams want to get there as early as possible so they can get started working on their robots!
