Finding out hours before load-in, but FMA Mount Olive District Event has been cancelled due to the issue of coronavirus.
FMA_-_Mt._Olive_Event_Update.pdf (95.2 KB)
This was just uploaded to the FMA Discord - and, I presume, emailed to teams and volunteers.
You’d think they could provide a bit more details.
Welp, time to update the “I survived Mount Olive 2014” t-shirts…
What happened in 2014?
Matches were 20 seconds shorter than they were supposed to be.
Oh no lol how does that happen? How long did it take for them to notice?
No email here yet, but I got a phone call. Fortunately we found out before leaving.
I want to be extremely clear that the issue from 2014 was due to FMS, NOT the event organizers or planning committee. Please be clear when posting things that can poorly represent an event.
From the information I’ve been hearing, state and local officials recommended the cancelation and local officials had to make a very difficult call. Knowing the folks on 11 and how hard they and others work for this event, nobody wanted this to happen.
Hopefully more information is released when possible. Please keep in mind that public health issues are not something to take lightly, so any communication must probably be vetted through multiple higher ups to then be able to send to teams to ensure accurate information, instead of speculation.
Sorry to all teams this happened to so far. Makes me think we should just postpone all of 2020 to 2021 and replay the game next year if this type of radical decision making will keep happening.
As an alum of 11, I sincerely hope that this season is not a wash and that there will be solutions to these canceled events soon.
Pls no
This season has been so long already! No bag day has been making this season extra long
A 58 week build season? I think that this might end up being the “lost year” of FIRST
Really emphasize the no bag day thing.
That’s pretty clear if you read the thread.
Anyway, I did the quick math to try to get all FMA teams into 2 districts. Of the teams scheduled to attend MO:
- There are 13 teams that can add an event Weeks 3 or 4
- There are 2 teams that can add an event Weeks 4 or 5
- There are 14 teams that can add an event Weeks 3 or 5
- There is 1 team that can add an event Week 3 (1676)
- There is 1 team that can add an event Week 5 (11)
- 193, 219, and 4361 were originally signed up for three FMA district events, so they are not included in the count above.
- 303 has already competed at Hatboro and is also registered for Bridgewater, so they are not included in the count above
- 125 is out-of-district, so they are not included in the count above.
The remaining 2020 FMA Schedule:
-
Week 3
** Robbinsville - 33 teams
** Springside Chestnut Hill - 33 teams -
Week 4
**Bridgewater-Raritan - 36 teams
**Seneca - 35 teams -
Week 5
**Montgomery - 35 teams
**Bensalem - 35 teams -
Week 6 - District Championship
Any chance we could increase the capacity of the remaining district events to 42 teams? Could the DCMP be pushed back to Week 7 to allow for another district (especially with Detroit being a week later this year)?
I think they will, when they know - but also, they just need to prioritize getting a formal statement out into the wild about the cancellation as soon as possible so teams can know what’s going on.
Believe me, as an FMA team I’m concerned for multiple things - how district points will work for us if our events are cancelled, if our later-season events are going to pile in more teams, what happens if this starts a domino effect of more events cancelling…
However, the worst thing we can do is spread rumors and speak for FIRST/FMA when they’re not ready to make statements… so we’re just gonna chill, stay home and watch events, and wait it out.
Blergh. Now I owe the first night of my hotel reservation due to late cancellation. Had I known yesterday…
The more events I see drop, the more scared I get the whole season is gonna go down. Hoping to see this virus come to an end quick and soon.
And here I thought the season would be ruined by the terrible choice of game piece
The logistics of figuring out who can go to the championships is going to be a nightmare now…
Teams that don’t have a ton of money / freedom to quickly rebook and rehash plans to go to another competition are going to suffer.
If they’re already canceling Mount Olive, I have concerns for next week’s events. One event can be dealt with but if 2-3 events are canceled, things become a nightmare.
