guys hello just a reminder that this is a fantasy league for a highschool club.
This league means close to nothing besides just having fun :slightly_smiling_face:

I feel like this conversation is just going in circles so I’ll just give my final thoughts and then leave for the rest of you to argue over.

Despite the arguments in this thread, I think everyone in this league wants the league to be fun. Obviously the disagreement comes in what some people consider ‘fun’ and what other people consider to be ‘distracting.’

At the end of the day, each draft is up to the draft runner. As a draft runner, I personally enjoy a lot of interactions in a thread. Having a draft with only pick posts is boring and seems like a waste of my time. However, some friendly banter and chatter really livens up the draft. Now, when people are attacking other people in my threads, that’s a different story, but I’m just going to assume we can agree that posts should be generally respectful of other people.

Now, other draft runners have different principles from me. For draft runners who would allow no memes, I have some serious questions. If it is that hard for you to be able to keep up with picks with a few memes, then you are probably not fit to be running the draft in the first place and should look for a replacement (sometimes a replacement isn’t possible so in those rare cases, go ahead and ignore this). However, if you do allow for some memes but want some rules in place to make sure that you can run the draft, just explicitly state them in the draft rules. If someone wants to complain about your rules (assuming your rules are within league guidelines and reasonable), then simply ask them if they want to run the draft for you instead. This isn’t to demean the other person, but rather just to give them the opportunity to fix it themselves rather than forcing you to run your draft according to what they specifically want.

And for a final point on this long tangent, I encourage everyone to step back and consider your own actions. Try to be more respectful than you currently are, because this league is getting to an ugly level of toxicity.

Really good post.

To add some extra context here:

For example, last night was a particularly difficult draft to run, seeing as it had to be done partially manually, and the picks were being live updated. Or you can look at PNW 1 where this pick was made. Imagine being at work/school and coming home to this thread trying to figure out what happened?

There are some very valid scenarios where the draft runners (those who have run like 60+ over multiple years and are very experienced in doing so struggle to keep up for good reason. We should be treating these people well and not making their lives harder for fun. They are spending an hour+ babysitting a draft so that you can have fun.

I’m memeing rn bc this whole situation is frankly ridiculous.

You want a thought out, nuanced response? You’re really making me not be silly for once?

This is a fantasy high school robotics league. Some people in this league are taking it way too seriously, more seriously than FIRST takes its own programs especially considering the way 2 champs doesn’t look to be ending anytime soon. This is not for money. This is not going to make your life better or worse in the long run.

This league takes a long time. I know I am not one to talk considering my only job on my team is to draft FiM, but I understand that some teams are spending every night for 2-3 months discussing who to pick for the 3 drafts going on that night, and that can become stressful as h*ck, even in a casual fantasy league. And sometimes, they might want to joke around and have some fun in the meantime. There is no reason why everyone needs to be robotic. The robots do enough of that. Lets have fun and not take ourselves too seriously. This league is becoming more and more decentralized with however many servers there are now, so this is the only place where we can really meme together as a league. And honestly? I don’t think we’ve been memeing enough most of the time that this action is required.

I will say I do think that PNW pick was ridiculous and I understand frustration there. However, the CHS thread wasn’t awful, the FiM5 thread wasn’t awful. This is a marathon, not a sprint, and I’d enjoy being able to have fun with people to help their stress levels.

Please.

As the Commissioner of the SLFF, CHS WAS awful.

Requests to TONE DOWN the memes were ignored, or flouted. I didn’t even ask for a full stop! NE 2 was worse–when you have to RESTART THE DRAFT in a NEW THREAD to get it back on track, it’s BAD.

We are ASKING, NICELY, for the SECOND time, to tone down the memes. Not remove them. Just not go meme-a-moment in the drafts. And we’re asking what, if any, penalty should be imposed if people refuse.

If you can’t handle toning down the memes at least a little tiny bit, then I’m sorry. But I VOLUNTEER to run this league.

And as a VOLUNTEER, I don’t have to be here. And that goes for the draft runners too.

So please, respect the volunteers. Or they just. might. leave.

For me, that’s not an empty threat. I’ve been considering stepping away for a while now.

Question:

Would having a single, separate, CD thread dedicated SOLELY to SLFF memes/offtopic/chitchat be an acceptable alternative? I’d probably suggest a new thread each season. If it is, I’ll have one up tonight.

That would come with a minor rules adjustment. That is, each draft thread would have a “hard cap” on memes/offtopic posts (I’ll just call the combination “memes” from here), set by the draft runner. Let’s just say 5 memes/player or 5 memes/team, in thread. More than that would have to go to the offtopic thread. Failure to take memes to said offtopic thread after a warning would result in a penalty of some sort–for the sake of argument, let’s call it a 1 point/excess meme penalty for that event, obviously TBD because we’re still discussing it. Linking from meme thread to the draft threads would be permissible, but I’m not sure if I’d say the other way would be appropriate/permissible. Flagging remains an option for extremely offtopic, or possibly “outsider” memes.

While this sounds like it could work, I feel as tho it wouldn’t. The joy of posting memes is posting them as things go down. If memes had to be posted in a separate thread with little to no context as to what they are referring to, chances are memes would end
Up in drafts threads anyways.

You can link from the draft thread to the meme thread to provide context.

Yeah I saw that. It could work, but I have a feeling it wouldn’t. That’s just my opinion. Im all for minimizing the amount of memes in draft threads though. As a new player in this league, I find it very difficult to try to keep up when I have to continuously scroll to try to find available team lists or picks that haven’t been run through the draft runner yet. That’s all I’m saying on this issue unless I’m asked something directly. Glhf.

I don’t really think it would be crazy to let the draft runner decide on whether or not they are okay with memes on their threads, and I thought an appropriate consequence would be to bypass any picks they (not there team) make the next day (but they can list)

I would agree, but then you do run into some inconsistency with the draft runners.

Example: I think Brennan would probably go more of a “no memes”; Erik would go “meme away”. That’s two different experiences.

What I might compromise on is “League standard is X, Draft runner may waive league standard”.

Penalties/consequences TBD, but I think bypassing picks is probably the best move. They can swap later or list earlier.

I’m going to do a trial run in San Diego. Limit 5 per person, penalty 1 bypassed pick. Limit might be a little on the high side, but I’d rather start high and bring down to comfortable.

This is a TRIAL, not a final.

How soon can a bypassed pick be replaced?

Wonder what the penalty is for “outsiders”:thinking:

At this point, I’m going to say standard timeframe (as in, next update)–so it’s not much of a penalty. If it was really really bad I’d go for after the draft was over. Like I said before: at this point, it’s more about getting the kiddos to behave for 10 minutes, not keeping peace in the vehicle for the entirety of an 8-hour drive.

@KaranY probably flags.

So if I were to post a meme in a pick thread a flag is in my future?

Not for the first one. Probably the second one.

Or I’d just /shoot @GoalkeeperBoss (For the FF folks, that’s a CD mafia reference, back a game or two).

A few drafts this week need runners ASAP: Central New York on Tuesday, Greater Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Heartland on Thursday, and Memphis on Friday.

If nobody signs up, I could always run them list only, but I imagine most of y’all don’t want that.
