2020 Team Update 8

I guess if climb scoring happens after 5 seconds, it makes sense.

Bold is what was added.

Section 4.4.1 POWER PORT Scoring
ALLIANCES generate energy by scoring POWER CELLS into one of three (3) openings of their POWER PORT. To be considered scored, the POWER CELL must pass through the BOTTOM, OUTER, or INNER PORTS and exit through the respective scoring sensors during the MATCH or within five (5) seconds after the MATCH (regardless of how many POWER CELLS are being processed after the end of the MATCH).

Seeing as how any climb is worth more than any cycle, even 5 in the inner port, this change is pretty insignificant to most matches, and especially those at a high level.

Kudos, yet again, to the GDC for making a really robust game and manual this year.

This seems like they’re just repeating a passage that was already in the manual.

Bold is what was previously there; bold and italic is what was added.

4.4.1 POWER PORT Scoring
ALLIANCES generate energy by scoring POWER CELLS into one of three (3) openings of their POWER PORT. To be considered scored, the POWER CELL must pass through the BOTTOM, OUTER, or INNER PORTS and exit through the respective scoring sensors during the MATCH or within five (5) seconds after the MATCH (regardless of how many POWER CELLS are being processed after the end of the MATCH).
If a POWER CELL becomes jammed in the BOTTOM, INNER, or OUTER PORT, credit for the jammed POWER CELL is granted in the period during which the POWER CELL became stuck.
Lights on the POWER PORT indicate progress towards the CAPACITY of the current Stage of the SHIELD GENERATOR. See POWER PORT for more details.
The final assessment of POWER CELLS scored in POWER PORTS is made five (5) seconds after the ARENA timer displays zero (0) following AUTO and TELEOP, respectively.

The already-existing text contains a further (useful) clarification that the 5-second-after-end-of-phase deadline applies to auto as well as teleop.

Yeah, their addition didn’t/doesn’t change my interpretation of the rules. I was under the impression from day 1 that if power cells were still making their way towards the sensor after 5sec after the end of the match, they wouldn’t be scored.

Seems like a redundant addition. But any clarification is welcome so I’m not complaining.

This will help all the robots that plan to fire their final volleys while hanging in the air.

Yeah, the change to 4.4.1 isn’t a change, just clarifying what was already the case elsewhere in the manual.

The big change here is that they’ve clarified the Layout and Marking diagram significantly. They added a new sheet (page 4) giving reference dimensions of the Shield Generator corners from the center of the field, which I know people have been looking for. Even more importantly, the diagrams used to say (and have for the last several years, if I recall correctly) that dimensions had a tolerance of 0.01 inches, which was… err… not really possible. It now specifically calls out the tolerances to be ±½″, which is much closer to being realistic. In practice, by the end of the weekend sometimes the fields are several inches longer, with odd bunches in the carpet, just from robots bashing into everything all the time, so I’m not sure one can really hold a field to it throughout an event. But now it’s certainly at least a standard one can try to expect for the start of an event. (And the opening to manual Chapter 3 ARENA even calls them “assembly tolerances”, not “throughout event tolerances”.)

In the late Stone Age when I was an FTA, we sometimes had to wrap the field in steel cable along the floor, and take up strain with a come-along to pull it back into shape. I recall seeing some more recent FTAs doing the same, especially in 2016. Their effort then, and mine ten years earlier, also required percussive maintenance. Using a large hammer.

If you’re going to call them out on it, just put the full effort in and tag someone from 610.

Lol we may have made sure the hang shot is possible with our design this year.

Yes another reason to have a turreted shooter.

But if you unload your robot while it’s hanging, won’t that upset the Level?
