2021 Chairman's Award Feedback Forms

With the feedback forms being digital this year, it’s easier to share them. I’m posting the feedback received by Spectrum below, I hope other teams consider sharing their feedback as well.

2021 District Level Chairman’s Feedback for Spectrum 3847

Winner FIRST in Texas District Level

What Impressed you the most about the team’s submission?’

  • How you assist existing teams is very clear
  • Strong submission with lots of numbers supporting the many events you do

What Improvements can you recommend for the team’s presentations?

  • show the can sculpture in your presentation
  • provide additional information to the essay instead of just repeating what is in it

What improvements can you recommend for the team’s essay?

  • Strong and clearly written essay.
  • Try to expand more on how your team’s initiatives spread FIRST to the community beyond FIRST.
  • Provide statistics on how MANY teams at each FIRST level you have helped/assisted/mentored to better support your efforts.

What Improvements do you recommend for the team’s operational and/or outreach efforts?

  • Your team has presented a different kind of FIRST growth–improved sustainability. Which is great, but can provide the number of teams that might have failed without the information Spectum provides? Can you provide more data about how all your efforts affect culture not just inside of the FIRST community but also the non-STEM community (“outside the tent”)?

Congratulations again on submitting for the Chairman’s Award and thank you for all you do to help spread the mission of FIRST!

Allen - any chance other teams sharing feedback forms could note if they won and if so at what level? It’s def something I can look up but far easier to just have it handy.

When did you receive your feedback, and was it directly from FIRST or via your district?

6328 received the feedback from our JA, but we had to request feedback ahead of time, as in before the interview happened. Our CA interview was March 24 and we received feedback on April 14. Unfortunately, our second round interview (for District Champ CA) was on April 13. :woman_facepalming:

Directly from HQ, our JA said we should get it from them the following week after awards were announced and we did (we got ours today).

We did have to request before the interview like normal.

I appreciate this effort to help de-mystify judging!

I’m not with an FRC team this season, but I think this sort of sharing is needed. It’s helpful to other teams and it will also improve the level of judging. I know of one regional where several teams shared their Chairman’s feedback with each other and discovered that they were being judged for RCA more like by rubrics that would be for the entrepreneurship award and not RCA. Feedback was given to the Regional Director (and higher) about this discovery and the RCA judges got some additional training the following year to help them out.

Below is FRC 2468 Chairman’s Feedback we received.

What Impressed you the most about the team’s submission?’

  • Well written and magnitude of impact is clear

  • Responses to judges’ Q&A was strong, concise and to the point

  • Strong essay with lots of good numbers to support the efforts!

What Improvements can you recommend for the team’s presentations?

  • Great job of hitting the high points from your essay.

  • Slow down a little on advocacy section to allow audience to hear everything.

  • Consider back-up slides for things like the RoBox kit that might invite specific technical questions.

  • Focus on the last 3 years (keep the longer term graphs but talk to the last 3 years not the last 5)

What improvements can you recommend for the team’s essay?

  • Be clear on describing your initiatives and what they are when you first introduce them. i.e. Lily pads and STEMConnect are not clear to a reader not familiar with your team till much later in your submission.

What Improvements do you recommend for the team’s operational and/or outreach efforts?

  • Continue doing what you are doing!!

  • Instead of trying to do more, the next thing we recommend you consider is more long term impact tracking. e.g. 98% of your alumni are in STEM degrees their freshmen year, but do they drop out of engineering at a lower rate then non FIRST peers?

Congratulations again on submitting for the Chairman’s Award and thank you for all you do to help spread the mission of FIRST!

Feedback Form

What Impressed you the most about the team’s submission?’

  • Excellent, focused written and oral submission. It is very clear how much you help other teams be successful in addition to your own team.

What Improvements can you recommend for the team’s presentations?

  • Give more solid examples to judge questions (i.e., don’t just say events, say WHAT are these events, ALWAYS give a solid example). Professional, spoke slow enough for judges to hear, which is much appreciated. But you can never have enough enthusiasm (without seeming disingenuous)!

What improvements can you recommend for the team’s essay?

  • Make sure it is clear how long and/or when the efforts took place (i.e. in the last 3 years, since 2009). Make sure you make it clear what were your newer efforts (in the last 3 years).

What Improvements do you recommend for the team’s operational and/or outreach efforts?

  • Don’t forget to mention the things you do to help promote FIRST outside of FIRST!

Congratulations again on submitting for the Chairman’s Award and thank you for all you do to help spread the mission of FIRST!

Team 7226 Chairman’s Feedback Form - FIRST In Michigan

(not winner)

What impressed you the most about the team’s submission?
The judges were impressed by the team’s:

  1. Engagement with state legislature officials to advocate for FIRST and other STEAM programs
  2. use of statistics to quantify the impact of their team’s efforts (e.g. number of social media followers)
  3. C.O.W.- novel outreach program
What improvements can you recommend for the team’s:
    Presentation –
There was a lot of good information presented, however, we felt that there are could have been more details provided in key areas such as the team’s diversity and statistics.
For example, there was a slide with many pie charts but the graphs and their legends were so small that we couldn’t tell what we were looking at and the presenter didn’t provide very much explanation.
Video (If used in presentation) –
N/A; No video used in presentation
    Essay –
We would encourage your team to find a way to:
  4. format/ break up the information into sections so that key point were highlighted and to improve general readability.
  5. Provide more detail about the specific involvement of the team 1) in the school district’s decision to implement STEM classes and 2) the grant writing processes stated.
  6. Share and document the impact of the team’s business team workshops What improvements do you recommend for the team’s operational and/or outreach efforts?
We are very interested in your team’s novel outreach program, the C.O.W and encourage the team to consider what key metrics will be collected to gage the impact of this project during its implementation. We would also like to encourage your team to find sustainable ways to support the FLL and FTC teams that your team previously started in your community.

Maybe I’m missing something, but that hardly seems like a fair critique. Every team has a different operational and financial situation. It there’s a sustainability, funding, of growth problem, fine. But this seems like grasping at straws.

We had similar feelings surrounding that critique.

Although, to be fair, after scouting the 9 other teams that won Chairman’s in the NE District, most of them had been charitable organizations/adopted some form of a non-profit situation far before the Hollis-Brookline Robotics Boosters Club (HBRB) was created in 2018 (that’s the 501c(3) that handles funding for 1073, as well as several other FIRST teams throughout Hollis/Brookline, enabling corporate sponsorship and connecting levels of FIRST through funding). HBRB took years in the making as we attempted to shift from handling expenses directly with the school to handling them with a board of parent representatives, so it could have come down to a lack of explanation in terms of the struggles of that transition on our part within executive summaries/the essay/presentation.

One of our lead mentors also explained that she thought the comment may be a reflection of all of the already well-established teams in the competitive NE District compared to our relatively new financial situation. Kind of frustrating as it’s not something that we can change, but maybe something that we can try to explain more next year!
