2021 FRC Season Same Game?

How would the FRC Community react to having the same game in the 2021 FRC season?

Why? I mean it does stink that the season was suspended but I would much rather just play it out this summer/fall then be done with it.

@jayden4093 When it comes down to it I think realistically it would be very hard for FIRST to work around all the other events that are already scheduled at the venues and rebook the events to resume play in the summer/fall. Let alone every team has already put so much effort into the season and spent so much money on everything. Also the competition would be much more competitive and be a lot more fun to watch. I think FIRST could think about the option and make it happen.

Not to mention the amount of money FRC spent on the fields, they were only used for 2 weeks.

Ok, fair points several events probably will be unable to schedule (I am not too nervous about our single event). However, I believe most will. I saw somewhere that Michigan district plans to reschedule as well as the Montreal regional. I believe most events should be fine. We should also have a chance to play the event off-season anyway. Besides, the competition is a very small part of the entire program. We design, build, and program the robots during build season. It kind of ruins the educational aspect of FIRST if we just use last years robot a second time and don’t do any of that. Another point is how fair is it hurts rookies too because they have to compete against other teams that built their robot the previous year and had an entire year longer than them to perfect their design. I don’t think FIRST would consider the option.

Assuming most events reschedule the fields will get plenty of use. They will also get use in off-season events.The field expenses are likely a smaller portion of the annual game expenses.

@jayden4093 Very fair points. For the educational aspect I was apart of a team and I am a alumni, there something to be said for honing in skills, also being meticulous in the minute details which will help the kids in the future. I think FIRST can get around the new rookie scenario by letting the rookies know as soon as they register, about the game and allowing the to start early on their bot.

@jayden4093 Who knows how much they spend, but I wouldn’t consider it a small expense. Also thinking the the team realm, they spent all this money on Reginald and district events and are not being refunded. The only event being refunded is the world championship. FIRST will be fine in this aspect but lots of teams may not be. Let’s say half the events get rescheduled than there are still half the teams that are out $2500+.

@jayden4093 **in the team realm
**regionals

I don’t quite understand what you mean. They probably would charge for next year either way. Maybe some unlucky teams that do not get their events rescheduled may have to pay, maybe they might work out some kind of deal where they get in free or save cash next year. But I feel that is unlikely to change based on game. The fields is probably not a huge concern to FIRST I don’t think just because they lost 4 weeks of use that they would justify redoing the same game.

I think that the analysis & design portions of the build season are essential to the student experience. Re-using this game would essentially remove build season for most teams, and that is the part of the season where students learn the most.

Although it’s a bummer not everyone will get to use their 2020 robot in a competition, I wouldn’t want to deprive next years students of a great learning experience.
