Well we didn’t achieve as much as we would have liked at Buckeye, but we did boost our EPA to 27.2, seed 7th, get to 5th alliance captain (again), bow out after our 3rd elims match (again), win an award (again), and we were one of 3 teams from “ho-hum” Ohio who managed to put up 117 unpenalized points in their first match together in the elims. This match would have been SIGNIFICANTLY more epic had we not spent the first 30 seconds of teleop trying to intake notes with the arm outside of collect position:
Just for fun, a few matches later, 2 more Ohio teams and a Chinese rookie team with an Ohio vibe put up 120 unpenalized in their 2nd match together. 15 of their 17 speaker shots made were amplified! I swear these guys saw us and were like - let’s do that - that looks fun! So they did it (slightly) better. It was fun to watch.
A little birdie heard some behind the curtain intel where someone was expressing great surprise that scores like this were possible at this event with these teams. Well, about Ohio (and Western PA and WV) FRC teams in general…someone might want to go to statbotics and sort all completed events by Top 24 EPA descending and take a look at Greater Pittsburgh and Buckeye.

Heck, take a look at Finger Lakes and the projection for Week 6 Miami Valley while you’re at it. This is NOT an easy region of the country to qualify from, folks. These are BIG regionals with DEEP, quality fields. LOTS of snubs emerge disappointed from these events every year.
Additionally, all y’all who’ve chalked this region up as an easy win over the years might do well to revise yer outlook:
2 winners and 3 finalists at Buckeye were from Ohio.
3 winners and 2 finalists at Greater Pittsburgh were from Ohio or Western PA.
All 3 Ohio teams attending the mighty Central Illinois Regional were either alliance captains (2) or 1st picks (1).
1 Ohio team attending Finger Lakes was an alliance captain.
People talk of many worthy California teams not being able to attend the Championship. As I said, this region will also have its share of worthy snubs.
Heck, Team 48 hasn’t won a blue banner or attended the Championship since before the pandemic, despite being ranked Top 15.1% worldwide in 2022, Top 8.2% in 2023, and (currently) Top 7.9% in 2024, with Miami Valley to go. We also had a blue banner taken away from us in 2021, but that is another story.
You’d think we’d manage to punch through at some point, but hey, good teams are gonna lose in this region. Stuff happens.
As a region, we’ve never publicly whined about this stuff, but when you see it en masse in defense of another state/region, I feel like it’s justified to shine a light on your own peeps in relation. Speaking of in relation…
Yeah - lots of quality teams out there all across the world who have not (yet) punched their ticket. Many this season never will. Inhales audibly. Regardless, I’m very happy to see the quality growth among teams in these here parts, and I’m hoping we start to see even more WOW representation at the Championship moving forward, whether my team is making that extremely long, expensive, of questionable worth relative to cost trip to Houston or not.
