2025 Unqualified Quokkas Ri3D Build Thread

G’day CD!

After such a positively overwhelming 2024 season, we are extremely excited to be diving into the 2025 FRC season, REEFSCAPE, with our amazing new sponsor AndyMark!

The Unqualified Quokkas is a group of mates and mentors from all across Australia, with the collective goal of raising the competitive floor of the global FRC community!
We will also have some new faces joining us this year, so keep an eye out on our Instagram for the roster expansion posts.

For REEFSCAPE, the plan is to upload some videos on our YouTube channel throughout the 3 days, like we did for our FTC Ri30H, that show off some of our prototypes and the testing that we do.
Like last year, we plan to make daily posts in this thread with our learnings, as well as links to any prototyping and testing videos we have.

After the 3 days, closer to the end of the week, we will also be uploading a robot reveal and publishing our tech binder. Additionally we will be sharing the full robot CAD and code, plus additional files to make the build easier for lower resource teams.

We look forward to answering any and all questions you might have about the 2025 game and our build in the chat on our stream as well as in this thread.

All of our workshop hours will be streamed on our YouTube channel.
See our stream schedule below for when you can catch us in action!

If needed, we will update the schedule by editing this post.

Good luck to all the teams competing in the 2025 season, we can’t wait to see the amazing robots you design!

Just thanking the team again for the 2024 design. Our JV team, 427, borrowed significantly from it last year - it brought us from “no viable design” to being a captain at our first ever event, qualifying for DCMP (and making an alliance!) in the team’s first year and being top 500 by EPA in the world. The technical binder and well documented process meant that even though we “copied” most of the intake/shooter directly, there was still a ton of valuable learning.

Our students loved your content last year. For a team with a green majority, it was invaluable. As an avid RI3D supporter and watcher, I’m excited to see what you come up with.

We are big fans of the products that Redux have on offer, as we believe them to be the best bang for your buck, and are excited to have the opportunity to design robots with them!

Stream is halfway through LIVE for day 2!
Thank you to everyone that tuned into the stream yesterday, we had a great time!

Sorry for the late post, its been a busy morning getting things ready to be machined.

A detailed progress report of day 1 will be combined into a Day 1 & 2 Progress Report alongside an accompanying video!
This is because, due to our timezone difference, we spent Saturday afternoon prepping, watched the game reveal at 4am Sunday morning, and then worked through until we ended stream and went home around 7pm on Sunday night.

Looking forward to answering any questions, here or on stream, that you have about our build or the game!

Any chance we can see the Onshape link and/or screenshots of what you guys currently have?

LIVE link is dead, but the stream on your channel works fine.

There’s also a quite loud hum/whine :frowning:

Thank you, the link has been fixed!

The whine/hum is the vacuum for the CNC that is unfortunately running nonstop, alternating field parts and our parts. We’ll see if theres anything we can do about it though!

Sure!
Sorry it took so long to reply, there is much needed context from Day 1 to look at everything we have at the moment…

After analysing the game there was a lot of geometry testing in CAD and discussion about the robot that we were building.
After all of this, we have fallen into building 2 robots again

Robot 1 is a design that explores the best and most efficient way to cycle both game pieces at the same time. It is designed to:

  • Pickup CORAL from the human player station and score it on LEVELS 2, 3, & 4 of the REEF
  • Remove ALGAE from the REEF and score it in the NET and PROCESSOR
  • Hang from the DEEP CAGE (currently being prototyped, and not in CAD yet)

Robot 2 is a much more rookie friendly option, designed to be a simple yet competitive solution for lower resourced teams. It is designed to effectively:

  • Pickup CORAL from the ground and score it into LEVEL 1 of the REEF
  • Pick up ALGAE from the ground and score it into the PROCESSOR
  • Hang from the DEEP CAGE

DISCLAIMER: We are still in the prototyping stage and so nothing here is final or guarenteed to work

We have a few ideas of things that could go wrong, and we are waiting for parts from the CNC to assemble our elevator to test things with some of the prototypes that are still in progress.

We can’t wait to answer any and all questions that come our way!

Unfortunately we dont have any CAD or photos for Robot 2, as we started on it late yesterday and it is currently a drivebase with just a superstructure on it.

All that being said, here are a few screenshots of the current CAD situation for Robot 1!

You might want to watch out for racking, especially on that carriage.

Watch us test a prototype of an ALGAE remover that works for ALGAE on both levels using a single position! It swings out passively at the beginning of the match with surgical tubing (not in video unfortunately), which lowers the amount of powered movement necessary.

This design has a little bit of flex, but it’s a straight forward design that we can see being helpful for rookies.

I just saw the very end of your stream and the nice success you had with your deep climb mechanism. I was impressed and decided to clip it. However now that the stream has ended the “archive” video was cut to 12 hours and that footage appears to be gone! Any way you can post that if you have a spare copy? I am sure we will see more of it tomorrow.

Thanks! We unfortunately forgot to film the test, but we will for sure do one on stream during Day 3 as well as record it to post it later.

Oops, time got away from me, it’s now 3am…

The Day 1 and 2 detailed progress report will come later in the morning once I have slept

For now though, head over to our youtube channel and check out our Day 1 and 2 Recap video!!!
