Offer the other I/O points as separate CAN-based modules. Smaller footprint. Smaller cost.

For FTC, I’m not sure this would be the case either for footprint or cost. You want everything to be in as few bricks as possible, lest you end up with Modern Robotics. I also don’t think CAN makes sense for FTC and I’ve talked about why here.
