2338 Scouting: GearScout 2016

Hi, I am the developer for GearScout, team 2338’s scouting app, currently in its second year. With many more features, nearly twice the code, and at least that many hours into it, I figured it was time to reach out to the community to see what people think. last year, we had over 200 downloads, and I talked with several of the teams who used it, including one of our competitors on Einstein, team 2826. So here’s what I would like to know about this year:

  1. Does your team use the app this year?
  2. Did your team use the app last year?
  3. If you do/did use it, what made you choose GearScout over other scouting options?
  4. If you tried it and didn’t like it, why not?
  5. What could be done to improve the app?
  6. Would you/do you recommend this app to other teams?

I’m not looking for just positive feedback(though I wouldn’t mind it), I would like to hear what you think needs improvement, too. If you haven’t tried the app yet, feel free to download it off the app store. Scouting is no secret, everyone deserves the chance to have a truly good alliance.

As Nate stated, Wave Robotics used Gear Scout to our benefit last year and are planning on using it again for Stronghold. It was easy to use and easy to export our data and customize what we wanted in the export.

Thank you to 2338!

Hello!

So I’m trying to use your app but how can I access the data I saved?

It depends, did you save to text file or to the AWS server? If you saved to a text file, it should be available in the home directory of your phone’s storage. Some phones don’t let you see this file from a host device (i.e. a computer the phone is plugged into), and in these cases we found it easiest to email the text file to the lead scout. If you use the “save to AWS server” option, then it was sent to our database. Software for extracting data from the server will be out before week 3 competitions. (probably tonight or tomorrow morning) Keep in mind that the text files saved to your device and AWS files have different syntaxes, because noSQL databases really don’t play well with… well, anything.

I can’t find the 2016 version on Play Store. It doesn’t come up with any search criteria for Gear, Scout, GrearScout.

search “FRC GearScout 2016”. alternitavely, here’s the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gif.gearscout2016

Hello,
Where can I find the alphanumeric code in order to identify the regional? Thanks!

This is a pretty common question. Go on TBA and type in the name of the regional you’re going to. The code will show up [in brackets]. It doesn’t have to be that code, either. Any 4 or 5 letter code will do. As long as all your scouters are using the same code, you’ll be fine.
