3/4 court?

Our team is looking at the possibility of shooting 3/4 shots from the corner of the trench run closest to the player station. I understand that this is legal but is this possible? What kind of motor power would be required to punt these balls 31 feet? Our team is thinking 2 neo motors to power the launcher for the whole system do you think this can make it, have you thought about/tested it?

You can get away with using 2 Neo’s. Your best bet is to prototype a shooter and see how far it is able to shoot, etc. Also run the math using one of the motors and the specifications that are given.

Our calculations with AMD Designspread sheet puts us 64.2 ft/s velocity with an entry angle at 0 degees, 14 degree launch angle. A 23 degree launch angle at 44.1 ft/ velocity should enter on a downward 10 degree angle.

We are looking forward to getting our prototype finished and see if are calculations are close

So with a 4" flywheel, about 6k rpm, assuming you can capture the entire wheelspeed? If you can fit a 6" flywheel, closer to 4k, which is doable with 1:1 NEO.
I’ll probably push my team towards a ~3:1, multiple 775pro setup instead.

In 2006 we were able to hit a similar target from half-court (actually shooting from the edge of the field to the centre of the field, so just over half-court in a straight line), despite the “maximum velocity” rules that were in place that season. Unfortunately we suffered a lot of “bounce out” as the combination of the backspin and ball velocity made scoring a goal more difficult than just “hitting the target”. We were able to do this using one FP motor, although we probably should have had a second motor on there as we dropped wheel speed after each shot and had to give it a couple seconds to spool back up for long range shooting.

I can’t see any reason why hitting the target from 3/4 court wouldn’t be possible… getting the shots to score might be more difficult than just hitting the target, though. The balls come in with a much different trajectory and energy than closer range shots.

P.S. Okay… I can’t find any shots of us actually scoring from half court in auto… it did happen, really… but here’s a bit of video of us missing with authority! You can see that range is not an issue! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxTuXen7S6Q&t=60s

Man, I miss the “spotlight” feature from old CD.

The bigger question is vision targeting. The Wheel of fortune is kind of in the way at that position unless you mount the vision camera somewhat low.
