I was just curious, at the regionals, has anyone seen any other 3-goal grabbers other thatn MOE- team 365, and Sparky 3.0- team 384. Thanks.
21!!! You were there silly…=)
Yea, I hadn’t seen that- didn’t see many matches, really- too much work, robot in pieces is not good. However, I did read that after starting the thread. My question, though was about three goal grabbers like us- who grab them all at once at the beginning.
yes whatever did happen to that lovely piece of twisted green aluminum…??? =)
Which piece of mangled green metal do you speak of? we have I think at least two bent pieces of metal for every match- once again, that was fixed for saturday. Anyway, I know that Wissahikon (sp?) was touting the worst damaged piece we had- which they had inflicted- when they were trying to get thier robot picked for elims.
The rumors are flying that Beatty (team 71) has an excellent 3 goal grabber. We’ll find out in 4 days if it works as advertised. For everyone’s sake except their elimination partners, I hope it doesn’t
Mike
Beach Bot’s strategy involves two goals, but we have capability for a third.
Here’s hoping it’ll actually work.
Yea, I heard about Beatty (71) and was inspired to search for a picture of thier robot. I must say that it is very impressive. Also, it seems as if they will be able to push anything with their shuffle drive. A link to a high-resolution pic is shown below.
Note: no front wheels
that thing’s a beast! I just hope that they pick us again. I wouldn’t want to have to play against that thing. a note on the drive system though, noticing that it doesn’t have front wheels, it must have feet pushing it to move forward somewhere. my question is where and what. the only way that we could see to make feet to work was if they were pneumatic. even if all the cylinders go to pushing that beast, that’s about 240 lbs. of what I’ve seen from our regionals, that’s not that much force to be pushing with. there are a lot of robots out there that can push over 250 lbs and move pretty fast. maybe they were inventive and came up with an egg gear or something to cycle without having to back-drive the motor. anyway, I don’t doubt that they’ll either be our best friend or worst enemy, but I would like to see how their high torque drives work.
Simon-
from what brian and I determined last night, they have the chiaphuas (and possibly bosches) powering the caterpillar drive with an egg-shaped gear like you mentioned. Also, we thought that the shock absorbers probably have near frictionless surfaces for easy sliding. I also think that they have some motors powering the back wheels for turning- I would think that turning is good. These are probably geared high for speed, like we were at first.the only disadvantage I can see is that they start vertical- it will be interesting to see how long it takes them to fall.
joe
the chiapuas is a good idea (for them, bad for us). as for the back wheels, a thought that just popped into my head. the way they’re put they might drive a ways while falling so as to make their to-the-goal time less. either way, it’s a tank that I don’t particularly want to play against. we (meaning pit crew) have enough work to do when we’re only bent mildly. if we play against them, they’ll tear us apart. I just don’t want to be there when the carniage lets loose.
Simon
p.s. stupid washers!
One thought I had was- if they put out their wings- that means they push from the middle, their only drive is in the center- putting the force on the chasis- minimizing damage.
also think how much big foot can take (and to appease the engineers, I won’t give a number). if we do play against us, it’ll take them a while to move us even if they can in the first place.I don’t off-hand know the stats on the chiapuahs, but I think it’ll be a good fight if we do play them (provided that we plant before they get going). this is all saying that we do play against them. we haven’t seemed to get placed with many teams that we’d either hoped to or against. either way, knowing our luck, we’ll get torn up. I guess I missed the part where you said beatty was a three goal grabber. that’ll help distribute force to where we want it. I (from a technical standpoint) just hope they don’t change their strategy to just go for one goal, cause then their best chance is to go for the outsides. if they do, we’re screwed. they’ll go right through our u-channel. I’ll agree with whoever said it to joe, this years game has changed (at least at the regionals that we’ve been at) from who control balls and goals to who can do the most damage to moe.

And that is why you are giving out that new award!!!
Well, the purpose of the award is to show that we’re not holding any grudges against anyone and that we realize that we are going to get broken in a normal match. We do realize the potential for teams TRYING to break us in order to get the award, but we hope (for the pit crew’s sake) that gracious profesionalism will prevail.
I have stayed out of this discussion for a reason. We keep secrets and keep them well, but I have to speak out about the “screw the match, lets kill MOE/Sparky”. We had the guts, time, money, and insanity to build a three goal robot. We added lots of little feature to it and use them whenever we can. Other goal grabbers and ball collectors shoudn’t “break” any 3 goal bot, but pushing is allowed. Many times we have been pushed out of the way and we have fotage of it. This game is a pushers game, not a goal grabber. Team 400, who had little people on their team and only one or two mentors (hi leo!) made it to the finals because they had a bot that shoved, no balls, no goals. They spent all their weight on power.

Umm… yeah, that won’t be a problem will it simon? since you WONT be there. Which means I get to fix your jinxed side of the robot; along with mine! And yes, the washers are stupid!
You’re correct in saying that MOE and SPARKY took a risk in going after all three goals right off the buzzer.
As a member of the pit crew, we saw quickly at VCU that MOE was coming off the field pretty beaten-up. Now I don’t have a problem with that… As long as the damage comes in the spirit of the game. If we grab onto all of the goals, and a team -while trying to take one away- happens to mangle an arm, that’s OK with me, and the rest of the team. I just hope that in all of our matches that a team doesn’t decide to mangle the robot for the heck-of-it. That is not in the spirit of FIRST, even though this years game is inherantly more violent than previous years.
see you at nationals!!!
-DUCKY-
ps- thank god for our abile pit crew and swanky pit.
So, with the start (and now finish) of the midwest regional, beatty’s (team 71) robot has been revealed. I could not pick up a stream of this regional, and I was curious as to whether they are actually a 3 goal grabber- the scores indicate that they may actually only get 2 goals.
Thanks,
Joe
joe and to everyone else, BEatty is great again. they do grab 3 goals and they move with alot of torque with their file card drive.
Simon, they are not going to rip us apart. Beat us? maybe but if we grabbed all three and they also did, they won’t be able to apple torque to one wing.
Beatty Strategy: HAIL MARY!
With your back to the field, crouching in the alliance station ready to grab a ball. When the horn goes off, arc a ball backwards over your head hoping that it will lodge under Beatty as it falls.
