What was the maximum possible score you could get in 1997, and how could you achieve this?
How high did you have to lift a floppie in the air in order to get points for it?
What national championship team had a long arm with a claw that allowed them to steal points from a goal and move them to another goal without having to drive their robot from position?
Good Luck!

I thought there were more than 6 tubes, but I couldn’t remember where the other three were. I remember 3 in the HP station, and three stacks of 3 on the field (in the parts of the hexagon where the HP stations weren’t). I remember each stack consisting of each of the three colors (i.e. one tube of each color in each stack for 3 tubes total on the field); that gave me six. Were there more than three stacks on the field? That was so long ago, I don’t remember it well.
Rumor has it that Wildstang is developing some sort of circuit for their robot in 2004 that will let Raul know when 3 Questions are posted, so he can win the Mountain Dew even when consumed during build time!
Wouldn’t it be more fair if the answers are sent in through PMs so the answers will not be made public the moment the first person answer them? Then again I guess it doesn’t matter if you are only counting who answer the questions first. I don’t know what I am thinking. I guess I just feel ashamed that I completely do not know any answers to all these questions. It’s driving me nuts! I don’t qualify as a FIRST-a-holic anymore… T_T
Ken, dont worry, you are still as much of a FIRST nut as the rest of us! The reason I dont do answers by PM, is because it allows people to get back in the game if they have fallen behind. Plus, I try to make the questions difficult enough so that it may take a while for 3 correct answers to show up. For instance, yesterday everyone thought that the perfect tie took place in 2002, when in actuality it took place in 1997. Though many people guessed the same, it wasn’t until the end of the day when Joe Ross actually finished out with the correct answer 2 minutes before I closed the question out. So, Ken, keep crackin at it!
2 Bonus Points for the first person to tell me the answer to the following question…
In 1999, there were two teams with the exact same robot that competed against each other in the final match at a California Regional. Who were these two robots?
yes, 252, broadway and blackford high school and 254, broadway high school. 252 folded after that year and in 2001 254 moved to Bellarmine college prep.
Team 25 was the cradle robbing national championship robot. Our scouting team rated them as “pathetic” because during the qualifications, they rarely acted as a cradle robber and their arm was too big and akward to be effective scoring from the field.
The floppies had to be off the surface of the playing field, but it didn’t matter what was supporting it to score points. And of course, 8 feet was the height to get 3 points.
The 1997 field was a hexagon, with a stack of each 1 of each colored tube in each corner, and 3 tubes in each player’s station for 9 total tubes for each team. Each tube on the top of the goal scored one point AND doubled your score, so the maximum score was 4608. I know I saw Beatty score 5 tubes on top in a match, anyone score more? Also, that was the last year that a playing object both scored points and acted as a multiplier.
My goodness… look at all of these dinosaurs of FIRST answering these questions. If you look at the people who are giving these answers, their average experience is probably around 7-8 years.
Way to go Scratch, for starting these questions. The old-timers are coming out of the woodwork.
I think that is one of the great things about scarfing up old memories through questions like these. It helps the oldies come out of the woodwork and get a little excited again. Though I won’t consider mission accomplished until I see Mr. Mike Bastoni come out of the woodwork, and the return of PNTA!
P.S. With all these rep points im gettin from ya Baker, you are making it more and more difficult for me to raz on you about the Colts!
