3322 - Record Over Time Graph

So earlier today I was watching a sports documentary (The History of the Atlanta Falcons Series, by Secret Base/Dorktown [I have no affiliation with the NFL or Atlanta, my scout brain just sees graphs and charts and goes “Oh?”])

Anyway, they primarily use a chart that shows the record over the entire history, and I decided I wanted to do that with my team, 3322.

If we win a match, the graph goes up by 1, and if we lose, it goes down by 1. Ties stay the same. The horiz axis represents # of matches, and the vertical is how much difference between wins and losses, kinda like goal differential in soccer.

Interesting Facts:
3322 has never had more losses than wins, which surprised me a lot

2015 was such an anomaly of a game with the different ranking system by avg score that we had a HORRIBLE record, but still somehow made it to Worlds.

Along with this, I have no clue how 3322 made it to Worlds in 2011, due to the fact we didn’t make it to States. I’ve asked around, and if anyone has an answer, please tell me.

Lowest Points (other than the first few matches)
2010 Ann Arbor - Quals 34 - +2
2011 Archimedes Div - Quals 63 - +2

Highest Point
2023 FIM States - Consumers Energy Div - Quals 31 - +73
(fun fact about this match, it was a “22” alliance since our alliance was 4422, 3322, and 226)

Dang, everyone really does hate Recycle Rush.

Very interesting data though.

What is this graph showing? It’s not entirely spelled out (as far as I can see).

Also, it might be that your team applied for a “waitlist” spot at champs. Used to give those out if there was extra space (pre Covid).

So the graph shows records in wins/losses/ties over the entire team history by match (not counting off-season). Each color shows a different year. When we win a match, it goes up, and when we lose, it goes down, and it stays in the same place for a tie. Don’t know if that’s what you wanted for an explanation, so lmk if you want to know something else.

3322 had a 0-0 “record” in 2015. The only time wins and losses were recorded in 2015 was in competition finals.

Open registration or wait list.

Yeah, for all of them I just went through and counted manually. Prob not the best way of showing 2015 but I wanted to show record over time and didn’t want to skip a year.

Perfect! I was just confused because your comment about your low and high scores. Those values for scores are very close to the height of the charts during those seasons. So wasn’t sure if it was some sort of cumulative points differential.

This is a cool way to look at team performance over time. Might open a feature request on TBA to add it (ideally with selectors for starting year–because older data is unreliable for older teams–and whether or not to include unofficial events)… all the data is there to build it.

It looks like the final cumulative sum is definitely lower at the end of 2011, 2014, 2015, and maybe 2016 and 2017 compared to the beginning of those seasons. Wouldn’t that mean that the team had more losses than wins those seasons? Perhaps I’m not understanding what you are trying to say.

If the graph were to go into the negative range, then the overall team record would have more losses than wins. Yes, in some seasons we have a losing season, but combined overall, we’ve never had more losses than wins.

Yeah, honestly that would be a really cool interactive feature.

Very cool! I wrote a script to make the graph for my own team

The jupyter notebook is here for anyone interested.

Did ours by hand… with a little help from sheets.

I’ve always said, “2017 was our best season overall”. Numbers seem to support that.

Woah nice! Does this include off-season events, cause those were something I was mainly avoiding due to different drivers, etc. Also, I barely ever use github and am scared of programming lol, so I have no clue what I’m doing with it rn.

Thanks for the source code, 469 is currently sitting at 466 net wins it looks like.

Not the only time we’d find ourselves together lol

  1. Went to 2011 Archi on the same circumstances
  2. Was 2012 Kettering 1 finalists together
  3. Beat you at 2012 Livonia in Finals
  4. Paired on the 8th alliance at states 2012
  5. Paired with you 2016 Howell
  6. Paired with you 2016 Bedford
  7. Same division states 2022
  8. Beat you at 2023 Saline in Finals
  9. In the same division at 2023 Archi AGAIN

Someone should make a graph like this for the Poofs. Normalized, I expect it will look like a line with slope = unity*.

*except for 2015

honestly thought the script was bugging at first until I thought about it lol

Here’s one with a slope=1 line for comparison

Am I missing something or 2015 is bugged? Or is it just because of that year’s win/lose protocol?
