3D Printed MK4n Swerve Covers - Team 1727 REX

We’ve been working on custom 3D-printed covers for the MK4n swerve modules, and we’re excited to share the results with you all! These covers are specifically designed for the SDS MK4n module there are both an A and B variant.


Description
The covers provide a sleek, protective solution that fits perfectly over the module, keeping everything safe from debris while still allowing easy access to all critical components. There’s a convenient window for viewing the encoder debug lights, and only four screws are needed to secure the cover, making it easy to remove when necessary. The screw holes are recessed to allow a regular 10-32 socket head to fit flush with the top, but you can also use a button head if preferred. The screws go directly into the pre-tapped holes in the module’s top plate.

We’ve tested them, and they’ve held up well under competition conditions. The only minor downside is that the covers slightly extend over the frame perimeter to encompass the protruding gear, but this is covered by the bumpers and falls within the 0.25" limit according to R101. They protrude by about 0.075" at most, which is less than the height of a button head screw. This overhang is necessary due to the protruding gear of the module, and is also used to help keep the module secured in place.

Printing
For printing, we recommend orienting the top side down to reduce support usage. A small amount of support could be used if desired for the recessed holes, but it’s not necessary on all printers. The ones pictured were printed on a P1S without supports, though some stringing occurred around the holes. If you want to avoid this, using supports may fix the issue, though it can take a little bit to remove them.

Thanks for sharing; this is precisely what our team is looking for! But do you have the cad for the front-right and rear-left modules? It seems that you’ve provided the shell for the front-left and rear-right modules.

Sorry for the confusion, I only took photos of the one cover for the A module but the Onshape document contains the CAD for both the A and B module and both fit each respective module. The images of the CAD below give a better example showing that they are both specific for the A and B module.

Me and my team are also doing project of the MK4n cover. l’m really afraid of whether the gear that bulge out would contact with the cover under collision during the match. So we decided to only do the top over. Do you guys met such a problem during tests?

The sides will be pretty crucial to keep debris out. It was exacerbated this year by all the note dust but the grease in the gearboxes is just a magnet for that kind of stuff.

We use WCP bumper mounts (which hold really well) with a .125” spacing between the inside face of the bumper and the drivetrain wall, ensuring that our bumpers have enough space to avoid frequent contact. Additionally, the slight overhang prevents the cover from being pushed into the protruding gear.
