5K Scholarships Available for the Asking!

ASME has extended the deadline for the 10 $5,000 FIRST Scholarships until March 22, 2006.

One can easily read between the lines here: not enough applications came in to award 10 scholarships. Out of the thousands of HS Seniors in FIRST, less than 10 applied for these 10 scholarships. If you want $5K for college, fill out the application and send it in - it doesn’t get much simpler.

Reading between the lines even more… if folks don’t apply for these scholarships, they will disappear from future years. Nobody wants that to happen, so start applying.

ASME FIRST Scholarship Link - with the deadline extended

you have to have someone in the society write you a letter and idk anyone in the society as im sure most people dont.

Of course these sound great but bottom line is the nomination aspect. My daughter is a member but she knows no one else involved in her circle of influence that is also a member. If they were really trying to give out scholarships, they should have dropped the nominations.

I don’t know any ASME members that I could talk to about nominating someone, so this won’t help us.

Hopefully someone can use the info though.

How about this - what if a student puts out a call to any ASME member by this website for a nomination?

The nominator can simply detail the students’ participation and offer their support for the person pursuing the scholarship.

As an alternative, maybe the ASME link can be a way to bring in another member into your team? By simply looking in the phone book for an engineering company, making an inquiry about contacting a Mechanical Engineer, and putting out a pitch to get a nominating letter you could be in business. Sure it is a bit of work, but if it takes you 2 hours your potential pay back is a rate of $2,500 an hour.

I’m a card carrying member of ASME (since 2001).
If you feel I know you well enough to write you a recomendation, PM me. I might say yes, if I feel the same way.

Anyone else?

Edit: A worthy student already PM’d me. Do not be discouraged, ask other engineers if they are ASME members. /edit

I feel the same way as John. However I let my membership lapse last time I moved :frowning: . I just re-upped so I may not have it in time to help.
Pete

I signed up with ASME so I could nominate students. I’ve already used my nomination this year and I’m pretty sure who I’m going to nominate next year if I’m asked. But I need somebody else to nominate an extra student on our team.

In a way I’m glad to hear this as it means the kid I nominated has a really good chance.
