For those unaware, a CADathon is like a hackathon but with CAD. People/teams are given a short period of time to CAD a specific thing (in this case a robot) ending with a panel of judges selecting a winner. If you would like more information on the CADathon check out our first, second, third, or fourth CADathons.

As for what will go on in ours:

Participants will be split into teams of 2. Teams can be premade with people who know each other or participants can enter by themselves and compete solo or be assigned a random partner if they wish. Partners will be assigned by skill level along with the prerequisite of sharing a common CAD suite. We will try to make sure partners are in the same time zone but that will be more difficult.
From there, every CADathon participant will be invited to the F4 CADathon slack, where they will be able to talk to each other, and be able to ask the GDC questions directly. The teams have approximately 3 days to CAD a robot from the game reveal. The game reveal will include a CAD model of the field, and a game manual. When they are done, teams must create a high quality render of their robot and submit a link to their robot uploaded in its entirety on GrabCAD. Help will be provided if you need help rendering, or using GrabCAD
Teams will also submit a google forms “pit scouting document” which will help explain their design to the judges. If teams do not submit both a render and a GrabCAD link by 8pm on August 5th, they will be disqualified. Once done, the files will be inspected to make sure they adhere to the game rules. On August 13th, a special F4 CADathon show will go live, hosted on the FUN twitch channel. A panel of 3 special guest judges will judge each robot on set categories explained in the game manual. The judges will also present their scores for each design, their reasoning behind their scores, and finally announce the winners.

The only prerequisites to join are that you are willing to spend time doing it and that you have access to some CAD software. You can be any age (this is not limited to students) and we encourage everyone from newbies to the most advanced CADers to put their skills to the test. If you are new to CAD and would like to be on a larger team to help yourself learn, please contact us as these will be handled on a case to case basis. If you are interested please sign up at the link below. Sign Ups close on August 1st at noon but please sign up as soon as you decide to participate.

We will be using Canvas to manage the various team submissions (such as the CAD submisison, “pit scouting” form etc etc.). Once you sign up for the CADathon an invite will be sent to your email to join Canvas.

If you have any further questions currently, either post them in this thread, or PM Rohit Gondi (dirtbikerxz) or Samuel Perkowsky (sperkowsky) directly.

I’ve been looking forward to this all summer. I have had such a great time competing in the past 4 Cadathons and I know this one will be just as good.

40 people signed up already in less then 20 hours!!

Is this meant for groups or individuals?
Can we see some of the past winners?

Teams can be made up of individuals or teams of 2 people (or in some cases 3 people. These cases generally consist of the 3rd person having 0 CAD experience and wants to tag along with a team to learn). it is your choice.

Here are the top 3 robots of CADathon 3:

Here was the first place team of CADathon 4:

You can find more details in the posts of the previous CADathon threads (links are in the original post above).

I have a question about something on the form: What is meant by the question “Time Available”? Are you looking for specific times, days, etc?

And also, is it against the rules to have two groups from the same team participate? (For example, a team of 2 and one person working independently just for fun)

The time available tab is really just for random assignments. It gives us an idea of who plans on spending 3 hours vs 30 hours cading and helps us pair people up. If you aren’t going random don’t worry too much about it.

That is not against the rules at all.

You should have only seen the “time available” question if you selected “random placement” as your choice (which means you want to compete with a partner, but you don’t already have a partner so you want to be random placed with another “random placement” person using the same software".

The question is just to help us pair like minded people, so we are just looking for an approximate answer like " a few hours a day" or “going to do nothing but this for the whole 3 days” etc.

Will there be teasers this year?

Also, I’m stoked that that I finally have the time to compete this time around.

What time zone are the start/end times in?

I can’t wait to compete!

Eastern… probably should have mentioned that in the first place oops:D , 90 people signed up so far! Details about the possible awards and prizes for the winners will be announced soon!!!

Here is your hint:

I am whelmed. So much info to glean from this hint!

Really though, thanks for putting this on, not sure how much time i’ll have to devote to this in the upcoming weekend, but i’m excited to see the results!

Scruffy looking Nerf herders.

Excited to compete once again, third time’s a charm :yikes:

Never received one either. Maybe try checking spam folder??
