Because of the dual issues of reduced full-power output and extreme risk of damage when stalled, we’re no longer using the Fisher Price motor where we intended to.
So far, we have not changed any of our plans. The motor is not alone in the system, it is being helped along. We have a heat sink on it and a small muffin fan zip tied right on it blowing through the hole in the can right onto the commutator. We would have stood off the fan from the motor with a custom mount, but we found zip tieing it on to be a quite simple and effective solution. I would recommend our fan/heatsink setup to anyone using this motor for anything, at least it would never hurt to have it. Be sure to use heatsink grease/compound.
We’ll use '04 FP motors which are now legal as per Team Update 10. Also, we will trade the 6v motors for 12v motors with 13t pinions. We can use them as spares, or can use them if we find that we want to “gear down” our arm.
By the way, does anyone know what the 6v ones are used for? I thought all the FP cars used 12v batteries.
The 6volt cars are the smaller ones used for the small sized cars. If you look on the powerwheels website, you will see all kinds of 6v options.
All,
The 6 volt thing should not be new to any CD readers. The only thing that is new in the update is the unavailability of this motor and the approval to use previous year motors. If you do not believe me, see this post:
We ran the numbers on where we’re using the FPs and shouldn’t have a problem. But just in case I got some spare of the 6 V motor since we designed our gearbox around the 13 tooth pinion and had it built weeks ago, ran it for the first time on Saturday :o but that’s another story.
